A recent visit to Brisbane allowed me the opportunity to catch up with an old friend who has been an inspiration to so many who know his story! Sadly Rod can’t play golf again because his legs have stopped working and he was kind enough to give me a lot of his and his father - Jock’s clubs as well as a lot of nostalgic pieces including two vintage putters made by highly regarded club makers in Scotland in Ben Sayers and Frank Johnston.
Jock aka John Mackay was a staunch tough as nails Scotsman, a former captain of Indooroopilly Golf ⛳️ Club and under the very old handicap system- a former +2 marker- playing in the era of Peter Davies, Drew Tovey, Budge Gill and the infamous Keith Drage who back when I was about 12-14 years, I caddied for occasionally at the old Indooroopilly (now St Lucia)- circa 1976-78.
Jock was instrumental in the Long Pocket and the old dump site (now Green and Blue nines at Indooroopilly Golf Club doing a deal with the then Lord Mayor- Clem Jones to facilitate the project. He was a great man ! However his son, Rod, who was a very promising junior golfer who sadly had a car accident at around the age of 19 which caused extensive injuries to his body. Most would turn their backs on the game and so many give up on life but not Rod ! 💪 He returned to golf and played up until he was 73 years old- his story is one of the gutsiest efforts I’ve ever witnessed and I only have nothing but respect and appreciation admiring his love of the game and his determination to not give up! Congratulations on your achievements Rod and enjoy your retirement with your family- I’m delighted to be the custodian of Jock’s and your clubs which will be given a 2nd life through our Regional Junior Golf program and the clubs will take pride and place on some of the hand made trophies 🏆 that we’re creating- and hopefully will be displayed for many years to come in a guy’s man cave or cellar!

Attended an Auction in Inverell, NSW at The Inverell Club on Saturday- an estate of several families and wow, I wish a took our trailer- that's how good it was, regardless, the intent was as part of our journey to explore the bush with Daisyrie, and expose her to raw Australian life in the west- the Auction was just a bonus bit of fun and I picked up this unique piece from the 1920's era- This was or certainly looks like a first prototype of the now popular standbag. As you can see from the clubs- they have lived a long hard life, with what looks like some rough weather exposure as well- anyway they're a great story and will sit proudly in our Museum here in Hervey Bay. So if you ever come to "the Bay" drop by and check out all the period, nostalgic and interesting golf gear we have here- it's building nicely now with lots of really cool stuff.
