Apparently Woolworths is moving away from Tasmanian meat products.
To be fair, I haven’t bought much meat from the big supermarkets for a long time anyway.
Mince full of water. Chicken full of water. And we live in Tasmania, where we’re surrounded by some of the best farmers and produce in the country.
But I think there’s a bigger conversation here.
Everyone wants small businesses to survive, but then we all naturally gravitate towards whatever is cheapest and most convenient.
And I get it. Sh*t’s expensive at the moment. People have families to feed and bills to pay.
But at some point we’ve got to start supporting the people actually on the ground.
Go to your local butcher.
Buy the eggs from the bloke down the road.
Stop at the roadside produce stall.
Support your mate who’s having a crack at running a business.
Spend your money with the people actually growing, producing and selling the stuff.
Even places like IGA, Hill Street and Salamanca Fresh promote the local angle heavily, but I’d still be interested to know how much of everything sitting on those shelves is genuinely Tasmanian grown and produced.
Because once the little guys are gone, they’re gone.
And once Woolies and Coles control more and more of the market, what do you think happens then?
We’ve watched the same thing happen everywhere.
Make it cheap. Make it convenient. Get everyone using it. Competition disappears. Then eventually the consumer pays for it.
Look at YouTube. Started off free. Now I’m paying a bloody subscription just so I don’t have to watch 47 ads 😂
Tasmania produces some bloody good food.
Maybe we should start putting more of our money back into the people who actually produce it.
