Bodhi

In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who has attained, or is striving towards, bodhi (meaning ‘awakening', 'enlightenment') or Buddhahood.
Often, the term specifically refers to a person who forgoes or delays personal nirvana or bodhi in order to compassionately help other individuals reach Buddhahood.

If you are an instructor of this art, integrity is paramount.

You must be willing to look critically at what you do and at your own level of ability. Pursue the art with confidence, but also with the balance and maturity to discern clearly and understand where your true ability lies.
Senior students and teachers carry a great responsibility. We are entrusted with transmitting the rich martial traditions passed down by Sōke Hatsumi in a manner that genuinely supports and preserves his Budō.

There can be no playing around, no half-hearted practice, and no pretending.

This art deserves more than people merely going through the motions or presenting the appearance of martial practice without the substance behind it. It is an art for adults who possess self-control, a good heart, personal responsibility, and the discipline to stand firmly on their own two feet.

To be a martial artist requires a devoted spirit—one capable of sacrifice and of organising one’s life so that training can be pursued consistently.

A strong will must be cultivated. One must develop the determination to continue through hardship and not allow temporary desires, emotions, excuses, or discomfort to dictate the direction of one’s training.

There must be genuine conviction toward the pursuit.

Without the heart for the martial arts, there can be no true development.

Without that commitment, one cannot sincerely claim to be walking the Way.

The Bushinden Dōjō holds a dedicated class for the study and practice of Shinden Fudō Ryū (神傳不動流).
For this class, the designated uniform is a white Keikogi paired with a black Hakama.
This decision was made at my discretion as Dōjō-cho.

DŌJŌ NAME
The name of my Dōjō in Hobart, Tasmania is the Bushinden Toku Bu Ryû Sui Dōjō
武神傳徳武流水武道.

The chosen name and kanji reflect my ongoing membership, respect and indebtedness to both the Bujinkan Dōjō (武神館道場) and Shinden Fudō Ryū (神傳不動流).

武神 (Jin/Shin) — In Bujinkan (武神館), this kanji is read as Jin, while it may also be read as Shin, as in Shinden Fudō Ryū (神傳不動流).

傳 (Den) — Meaning “transmission,” this kanji is taken directly from Shinden Fudō Ryū, symbolizing the passing on and protection of tradition.

徳 (Toku) – virtue, morality, inner character, ethical excellence

武 (Bu) – martial, warrior, military, the way of arms

流 (Ryū) – flow, style, tradition, school, lineage

水 (Sui / Mizu) – water, fluidity, adaptability, purity

Through this combination, the name Bushinden Toku Bu Ryû Sui honours both lineages, my teachers, and their fluid transmission within my Dōjō.

The Dōjō continues to be affiliated closely with and follows the rules and guidelines as stipulated by the Bujinkan Honbu office.

When you learn something, you should be able to teach it to people. You should put the same effort into teaching as into learning. And if you want to teach, you should be humble enough to learn something. Then you can teach. If you try to teach just because you know something, you cannot teach anything. When you are ready to be taught by someone, then, if necessary, you can teach people in the true sense of the word. So. To learn is to teach and to teach is to learn.
