🐓 ā€œWhy do horse’s muscle sometimes spasm or twitch during bodywork? ļæ¼

This is one of the most common questions owners ask during a bodywork session.

While working on areas of muscle that are particularly tight or restricted, it’s not unusual to see the muscle begin to twitch or spasm beneath my hands.

So, what’s actually happening?

A muscle spasm is an involuntary contraction of muscle fibres. When a muscle has been carrying increased tension, it can become more sensitive to touch and pressure. As bodywork stimulates the muscle and the sensory receptors within it, the nervous system receives a surge of information from that area.

In some horses, this results in small rhythmic contractions, or spasms, as the nervous system responds to the stimulation.

It’s important to understand that these spasms are a response, not something the horse is consciously doing. They are simply one way the body reacts when working on areas of increased muscle tension.

Not every horse will spasm, and not every tight muscle will twitch. Some horses instead lower their head, yawn, lick and chew, blink slowly, sigh, or simply soften through the muscles.

Every horse responds differently, which is why I pay close attention to each horse’s individual reactions throughout a session. These responses help me understand how the horse is processing the bodywork and allow me to work at a pace that is comfortable for them.

Have you ever noticed your horse’s muscles twitch during a bodywork session?

✨ Some of the clips I’ve completed over the last couple of weeks. āœ‚ļøšŸ“

Every horse is different, and I always take the time to make sure each clip is completed safely, quietly, and to a high standard. Whether it’s a full body clip, trace clip, or something in between, my goal is to keep your horse comfortable while achieving a tidy, professional finish.

Thank you to everyone who continues to trust me with your horses. I truly appreciate your support. šŸ’™

If you’re thinking about getting your horse clipped this winter, feel free to get in touch to book a spot.

ā„ļø Snowflakes, fluffy coats… and a very cute little white pony! šŸ¤šŸ“

Today’s clipping appointment was a little different, with snow falling around us while this gorgeous pony enjoyed a well-earned makeover.

A good clip isn’t just about appearance—it helps horses dry more quickly after work, makes grooming easier, and can help keep them more comfortable throughout winter, especially if they’re still in regular work.

Safe to say this little girl was an absolute superstar from start to finish. šŸ’™

Sometimes the job comes with frozen fingers… but days like this make it worth it!

🐓 What actually is posture… and why is it so important?

When we hear the word posture, we often think about how a horse stands.

But posture is much more than that.

Posture is how a horse organises and carries its body every moment of the day—whether it’s standing in the paddock, walking to the gate, grazing, or being ridden.

It’s the foundation for every movement your horse makes.

Good posture allows a horse to:
āœ… Move efficiently.
āœ… Stay balanced.
āœ… Carry both itself and a rider more comfortably.
āœ… Transfer power from the hindquarters through the body.
āœ… Reduce unnecessary strain on muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

When posture isn’t functioning as it should, the horse will often compensate. It may shift more weight onto one limb, brace through certain muscles, or change the way it moves to make the job easier.

Over time, these compensation patterns can contribute to:
• Muscle tightness.
• Uneven muscle development.
• Reduced performance.
• Loss of balance and coordination.
• Increased wear and tear on the body.

This is why, during my assessments, I don’t just look at where a horse is tight. I look at how the horse is using its whole body and what may be contributing to those compensation patterns.

Because when we improve posture, we’re not just changing how a horse stands—we’re helping it move more comfortably, more efficiently and with greater confidence.

Next time you’re with your horse, take a moment to simply watch them.

How do they naturally stand?
Where do they carry their weight?
Do they look balanced, or do they consistently rest one leg, stand camped under or camped out, or lean more to one side?

Sometimes, the way a horse chooses to stand can tell us just as much as the way they move.
