Fencing coach with a wall full of international medals? Here’s the story. 🤺

Before moving to Australia, coach Taras spent several years living and coaching in China. During that time, he wasn’t only standing beside the piste as a coach - he was still competing myself.

Chinese fencing competitions can be huge. Some open events had 150+ fencers in a single category, making every medal something you had to fight hard for.

In his final years in China, he managed to become ranked number one in open category of Chinese Fencing Association. 🥇

After moving to Australia, he kept competing whenever my coaching schedule allowed. Since then, he’s added an Australian team gold 🥇 and individual silver 🥈 to the collection.

Why does he still compete as a coach?

Because he believes competition experience matters.

Standing on the piste reminds him what your students experience: pressure, nerves, tactical decisions, mistakes, momentum, winning and losing. It helps him understand not only how to teach fencing techniques, but how to prepare young fencers mentally for competition.

These medals from China and Australia are more than results on the wall. They represent different chapters of his journey - first as a fencer, and now as a coach helping the next generation build their own competitive experience. 🤺

Once a competitor, always a competitor.

✨ First Fencing Lesson? Here’s What Every Parent Should Know 🤺

Thinking about introducing your child to fencing? Before they pick up a sword, it’s helpful to understand the basics.

⚔️ The Three Fencing Weapons
Olympic fencing has three disciplines:
• Foil – precision and strategy
• Épée – full-body target and tactical patience
• Sabre – speed, timing and explosive attacks

Each weapon has its own rules, target area, and style of fencing.

🛡️ Protective Equipment
A fencing uniform is more than just sportswear. Certified fencing equipment is specially designed to keep children safe during every lesson and bout.

🎭 The Fencing Mask
The mask protects the head, face, and neck, making it one of the most important pieces of safety equipment every young fencer learns to use correctly.

🤺 En Garde – The Foundation of Fencing
Every fencer begins with the En Garde position. Learning the correct stance, balance, foot placement, and blade position builds the foundation for movement, attacks, and defence.

💡 Start with the Basics
The best first lesson isn’t about winning—it’s about learning safety, understanding the equipment, and developing strong fundamentals. These skills create confident, safe, and successful young fencers.
