Worked for our pigs this run but persistence paid off for Grandson Jack and I. We had to think our way to these three and that’s a very satisfying result. This block is tightly managed pig wise with co-ordinated trapping and shooting programs on site and a seperate baiting program next door. We did some scouting with the thermal but any pigs out at night were very buggy shy and well aware of our presence at range. So we spent the pre dawn sticking our noses into likely campsites and busted these fugitives.
No matter how much pressure pigs are under, they don’t fly to Mars.

Two vids from yesterday morning, not 24 hours after the 10 minute epic was shot. Baz again, but this time he got into it immediately. He recognised the set up when he approached and just start going left and right. I added a second traffic cone and went again. So in about two minutes this time he showed he understood the concept.
So why bother? Well, it’s a handy way to start a sheepdog casting left or right. (Get them doing it and layer in left and right as word associations with the direction and increase the reward. Then bit by bit move the dinner dishes further out…) It is handy way to reinforce a dog’s natural capacity to follow a point by a person, handy if you can see a pig your dog hasn’t clocked…) And it’s just a fun game for the dog if you aren’t hunting as much as you’d like.

The video I warned you about. Real time, no commands for the dog. He just has to read my mind.

1. Set up the gear.
2. Reward accidental compliance.
3. Repeat.
4. Baz starts to get the picture.
5. Do it again the next day.
This is like doing a crossword for a dog. It serves no other primary purpose than to exercise the dog’s mind.

This is an intro reel for tomorrow’s post on the cone exercise. It’s purely an exercise in independent thinking for the dog and my real time video of what it looks like is a marathon 10 minutes. It is long and dull but my object is to show you what gradual improvement looks like. Don’t be fooled by my comments in tomorrow’s post though. I say I’ll stop at six minutes but I lied and keep going until you see the dog start to put it together. Useful for stimulating a dog’s mind and giving you an opportunity for positive engagement.
