🗞 MARCUS Wilson says he was born and bred into racing. Following his father John Wilson into training, he built on a natural love for animals to create a career he loves.
The pattern of his career was set by spending mornings before and afternoons after school at his dad’s stables and weekends at the races.
Now 40, he has already trained horses for 20 years. He credits his father and early work at Scone Vet Hospital and Arrowfield Stud for shaping his skills.
Marcus started training on his own in 2006 in the Hunter Valley, with one horse, and soon landed his first winner at Gosford.
A temporary move to Queensland became permanent after immediate success. He later established stables on the Gold Coast.
Marcus still loves racing for the horses, the owners and the challenge. While a Group 1 remains the dream, any winner anywhere is satisfying.

🗞 IN THIS week’s Ipswich Tribune Today is the first part of a special feature about Michael Schubert, the jockey who rode Sombani to victory in the 1968 Ipswich Cup.
Michael is a lovely bloke always ready to help who likes to talk about racing and LOVES a chat. He has endless yarns about everything, not just racing. The blessing is, at 81, he can recall them all.
He rode for Fine Cotton’s owner and, after retiring from riding, drove trucks carting champions including Kingston Town and Might and Power. Later, he chauffeured top jockeys to the races.
Before all that, he went to school at Redcliffe with three poor shoeless boys who went on to become the Bee Gees.
