The evening of Friday the 3rd of May saw many players from the Southern Queensland Associations gather at Norths Cue Sports for the annual City vs Country A Grade and Women’s Singles competition. For the first time in many years, both categories entries were filled completely, which made for a full night of entertaining pool. Congratulations to everyone who entered and challenged themselves.

Saturday morning saw the beginning of the round-robin format. Eight Women’s teams kicked off at 9am and the room was abuzz with plenty of colour, cheering and laughs. It was pleasing to see the competitiveness and comradery within the SQEBF is still strong.

After the Women’s finished their first two rounds, it was on to the A Grade teams to start their campaign in the early afternoon. Again, the room was filled with constant cheers and the atmosphere was amazing. Like the Women, a great amount of respect for each other and plenty of banter was shared throughout. When the final matches were played, plenty of exhausted bodies retired for the night with another full day of play scheduled for Sunday.

The Women’s kicked off Sunday again with back-to-back matches before the A Grade teams filled the the room to start the remainder of their round-robin matches. When Sunday came to a close, Norths would find themselves on top in the Women’s through superior percentage with City 8-Ball at the summit of the A Grade after finishing undefeated.

Enter Monday, and with it finals. The finals format was 1st vs 4th, and 2nd vs 3rd, with straight elimination and no second chances. In the Women’s, Norths won a final frame battle over Ipswich while City 8-Ball accounted for Gold Coast in a one-sided scoreline. In A-Grade, City 8-Ball and Sunshine Coast both eclipsed their opponents Ipswich and Norths respectively, in final frame thrillers.

Unfortunately, there were to be no repeats of the Semi Finals with close finishes, with both Norths in the Women’s and City 8-Ball in A Grade both sweeping their opponents with ease to raise the trophies for their Associations.

A huge thank you to Tournament Director Sean Cullen for running the entire event. Not only setting up the tournaments and providing the team packs, he was there from the first break to the final ball potted. Thank you also to our Marketing Officer, Shane Alexander for the extra set of hands when required, taking photos and his non-stop energy he brings to events. A special thank you to Tracey Lee who stepped in when the admin team were having battles with Poolstat. You rectified issues we were perplexed with and your help assisted in a smooth finish.

A huge thanks to Tony, Leonie, and the team at Norths Cue Sports for allowing us to use their venue. Countless players praised the performance of the tables and I couldn’t agree more with how good a condition they were in and how well they were playing.

Finally, a thank you to all the members who trialled and played, and to all who visited and supported your teams and the event. City vs Country is such a prestigious event on our calendar and you all did the occasion justice in the way you represented yourselves, your Associations and respected each other, so thank you!

The SQEBF calendar is filled with events in the coming weeks! So please keep your eye out for what is coming up either on our page, or our website. We look forward to another entertaining weekend when our B and C Grade Associations gather in Ipswich for their turn for City vs Country bragging rights.
