PUT YOURSELF FIRST!!

CAN YOU???????

Maybe your exercise class needs to be an appointment that doesn’t get cancelled. 😉

We are very good at putting everyone else in the diary.

The doctor’s appointment.

The dentist.

The grandkids.

The shopping.

The appointments for the husband.

The appointments for the kids.

The things that need doing.

And then somewhere down the bottom of the list we put:

“Exercise… if I’ve got time.”

Hmmmm.

Maybe we need to turn that around.

Your health deserves a place in the diary too.

And sometimes that means telling the family:

“Sorry… I’m at exercise.” 😂

Not because you’re being selfish.

Because you’re investing in the body that is going to carry you through the next 10, 20 or 30 years.

You don’t need to apologise for looking after yourself.

And here’s something else I really want you to remember…

Coming to class isn’t just about the exercise.

Yes, we’re working on strength.

Balance.

Mobility.

Cardio.

Coordination.

Getting down and getting back up.

Carrying things.

Pushing and pulling.

Doing the everyday things that help us stay independent.

Physical activity in older adults is linked with better functional health and a lower risk of falls, as well as benefits for cardiovascular, cognitive and mental health.

But then…

there’s the bit afterwards. ❤️

The coffee.

The lunch.

The chat.

The laughing.

The “How did you go with that exercise?”

The conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with exercise.

Sometimes that’s the bit people didn’t realise they needed.

Social connection is important for both mental and physical wellbeing, and research on group exercise in older adults has identified social connection and support as important contributors to attendance and ongoing participation.

So when you come to class, you’re not simply ticking “exercise” off your list.

You’re giving your body some attention.

You’re giving your brain some stimulation.

You’re giving yourself an hour where you matter.

And you’re spending time with people who are doing the same thing.

Then perhaps you go and have a coffee together afterwards…

which, let’s be honest, may be one of the most important parts of the whole morning. 😂☕️

So here’s my little challenge:

Stop treating exercise as the thing you do if nothing else gets in the way.

Put it in the diary.

Protect that time.

Let the family know that’s what you’re doing.

And then come along — even on the days when you’re not feeling quite 100%.

Because looking after yourself isn’t something you should have to squeeze into the leftovers of your life.

You are allowed to make yourself a priority too. ❤️

HOW ARE YOU FEELING TODAY?

You don’t have to feel your best to come to class. ❤️

There are days when your body just doesn’t feel quite right.

Maybe you’re a little stiffer than usual.

Maybe your knee, hip or back is grumbling.

Maybe you’re feeling tired.

Maybe you didn’t sleep well.

Maybe you’ve had a rubbish week and you’re just feeling a bit flat.

And sometimes the temptation is:

“I’ll skip today. I’ll come back when I’m feeling better.”

But here’s the thing…

You don’t always have to be at your best to come to class.

Sometimes you just need to come and do what your body is capable of doing today.

Maybe today you use a lighter weight.

Maybe you take a chair.

Maybe you don’t go quite as deep into the squat.

Maybe you take an extra rest.

Maybe you do 70% instead of 100%.

And that’s OK.

Because exercise isn’t an all-or-nothing game.

Regular physical activity helps maintain strength, balance, cardiovascular health, mobility and functional ability as we get older. It is also associated with benefits for mental health, sleep and cognitive health.

And perhaps just as importantly…

showing up keeps the habit alive.

Research into exercise programs for older adults consistently finds that social connection, support and feeling capable are important factors in helping people keep attending.

So maybe your goal shouldn’t always be:

“I have to have a great workout today.”

Maybe sometimes it’s simply:

“I’m going to turn up.”

I’ll help you work out what your body can do today.

You might surprise yourself.

And you might leave feeling a whole lot better than when you walked in. ❤️

Your best workout builds fitness.
Your “I’m not really feeling it today” workout builds consistency.

And both matter.

BALANCE ISN’T SOMETHING YOU EITHER HAVE OR DON’T HAVE!!

Here’s something I wish more people understood…

Balance isn’t a fixed ability.

It’s a skill.

And like most skills, we can practice it.

Standing on one leg while brushing your teeth might look like a balance exercise…

But balance in real life is much more complicated than that.

Your body has to constantly process information from:

👀 Your eyes
🦶 Your feet
🧠 Your brain
👂 Your inner ear
💪 Your muscles and joints

Then it has to make tiny adjustments to keep you upright.

And sometimes life doesn’t give us much warning!

A dog suddenly crosses in front of you.

You step onto an uneven surface.

Someone bumps into you.

You miss a step.

You turn quickly because someone called your name.

That’s why we practice balance in different ways in class.

Standing still.

Stepping sideways.

Changing direction.

Single-leg exercises.

Reaching.

Rotating.

Walking and responding to something unexpected.

And yes… sometimes I deliberately make you do things that make you wobble! 😜

Because wobbling isn’t necessarily failure.

Wobbling is information.

Your body is learning:

“Whoa… we’re a little off balance here. Better make an adjustment!”

The goal isn’t to never wobble.

The goal is to become better at recovering from the wobble.

Because staying upright isn’t about being perfectly still.

It’s about being able to respond when life isn’t. ❤️

THE SQUAT & THE HINGE: THEY LOOK SIMILAR… BUT THEY’RE NOT!

One of the things I spend a LOT of time teaching in my classes is the difference between a squat and a hinge.

Because bending over isn’t just bending over! 😂

🪑 THE SQUAT

Think:

“Down between my feet.”

Your knees and hips bend together and your body lowers.

It’s the movement you use when you:

✔️ Sit into a chair
✔️ Get up from the toilet
✔️ Pick something up from a low cupboard
✔️ Get down to the garden
✔️ Lower yourself towards the floor

🍑 THE HINGE

Think:

“Send the bum backwards.”

The movement happens predominantly at your hips while your spine stays controlled.

It’s the movement you use when you:

✔️ Pick something up from the floor
✔️ Load the dishwasher
✔️ Pull weeds
✔️ Lift a box
✔️ Reach into the boot of the car

And this is why I don’t want my clients simply being told:

“Bend your knees!”

Sometimes we need to squat.

Sometimes we need to hinge.

And sometimes we need a combination of both.

The good news?

Neither needs to be perfect.

We’re simply teaching your body different ways to move so that when real life throws something at you, you’ve got more options available.

And THAT is functional fitness.

Not fancy.

Not complicated.

Just useful. 💪

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE EXERCISE… IT’S ABOUT THE MOVEMENT

We sometimes get caught up in asking:

“What exercise are we doing today?”

But I think a better question is:

“What movement are we practicing ?”

Because your body doesn’t really care whether you’re holding a dumbbell, kettlebell, medicine ball or absolutely nothing.

It needs to know how to:

🪑 SQUAT – lower yourself down and get back up again.

🧹 HINGE – bend from your hips to pick something up without folding yourself in half.

🚪 PUSH & PULL – open doors, move furniture, push yourself up, pull something towards you.

👀 ROTATE – turn, reach behind you, look around and respond to what’s happening around you.

🦶 BALANCE – control your body when you’re standing on one foot, stepping sideways or dealing with an unexpected change in direction.

And here’s the important bit…

We don’t just practice these movements because they’re “fitness exercises”.

We practice them because life keeps asking us to do them.

Getting out of a chair.

Picking up the grandkids’ toys.

Putting something on a high shelf.

Carrying the shopping.

Getting in and out of the car.

Turning around to see who’s behind you.

Stepping off a step.

Catching yourself when you trip.

That’s the real workout.

We’re not training for the gym.
We’re training for LIFE. ❤️

CLASSES FOR WEEK STARTING 21/9/26.

Many of you know that I walk my dog most mornings VERY early… 🌅🐕

And by VERY early, I mean usually in the dark! 😂

But there is one bonus to being out there with no distractions…

I do a LOT of thinking! 🤔

And lately, one of those early-morning walks has resulted in a little idea that I think you might like…

It involves 6 weeks, 6 healthy habits and making small changes rather than trying to change everything at once.

I’m calling it…

The 6 Week Habit Stacker Challenge. 👀

I’m pretty excited about this one!

More details coming soon…

Who’s curious? 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

SIDEWAYS… BUT WITH A PURPOSE! 😜

We’ve been working on some side stretches using a resistance band — and it might look like we’re simply leaning sideways, but there’s actually a lot going on!

The band adds a little resistance and feedback, so we have to control the movement rather than just flop into the stretch. 💪

This helps us work on:

✅ Lateral flexibility – keeping the muscles through our sides, ribs and hips mobile.
✅ Core control – the trunk has to work to keep us stable as we move sideways.
✅ Posture and alignment – learning to move through the side of the body without twisting or collapsing.
✅ Strength through range – we’re not just stretching; we’re learning to control the movement.
✅ Body awareness – feeling where the band is pulling and responding to that tension.
✅ Functional movement – because life doesn’t only happen forwards and backwards! 😉

And perhaps most importantly, we’re practising controlled movement — moving into a position, managing the tension, and then returning with control.

It’s not about how far you can lean… it’s about how well you can control the movement.

Strong bodies need to be mobile AND stable — and sometimes the simplest-looking exercises are doing a whole lot more than you think! ❤️
