The Overland Hotel played host to our Senior Award Presentations, on a night where history was created.

The O'Shaughnessy Medal and Pauline Carter Medal were awarded to the first ever husband/wife combination in Jake & Zoe Prunster (picture inserted). Jake & Zoey play for Norths in the local competition, and have both had stellar seasons!

The O'Shaughnessy Medal was being presented for first time with both of the men whose name and legacy it carries no longer with us. Michael "Fox" O'Shaughnessy sadly passing earlier this year, following his brother Denis "Tree" O'Shaughnessy's passing in 2000.

An absolute cracking day of hockey for our juniors, with some close results that really could have gone either way! The weather was cold and wet, but the hockey was hot hot hot!

Thanks to our umpires and tech bench officials for their efforts today, it's a tough job, and it was made even tougher with the conditions!

Thanks also to our Junior Coordinator Jono & Kyeesha Crane for their work, along with Vice President Nash Hunt, he was also influential throughout the day!

A gentle reminder these two events are happening Saturday and Monday respectively!

The highlight of the Senior awards will include the O'Shaughnessy Medal and Carter Medal for the A1 Mens & Womens Fairest & Best players as judged by the umpire votes! Senior and Junior Champion Clubs will also be announced on the evening!

The Juniors are having a revamped format, something super exciting for all to be involved in! There will be a round by round vote count for the J9/12 division, the first in many years!

The fixtures are locked in, the Umpires have been allocated, Tech Bench Officials are sorted, and we are ready for a massive weekend of Finals hockey at the EGHA!

The action kicks off Friday night with our Women playing in the sudden death Elimination Finals, before the Men take centre stage Saturday afternoon in the same fixtures.

Then on Sunday morning, it’s GRAND FINAL TIME for our Juniors! 🏆

🏑JUNIOR ELIMINATION FINAL RESULTS – J9/12 BOYS 🏑

If the J3/8 Boys had set the standard earlier in the day, the J9/12 Boys certainly weren’t about to let them have all the fun! YMHC and Mines took to the field for their own sudden-death showdown, and what followed was an absolute cracking game of hockey, with neither side willing to give an inch!

The navy blue & white struck first, with Maslin Square breaking the deadlock at the 10-minute mark of the opening quarter to give Mines the early advantage! 🔥 Mines 1–0! YMHC weren’t about to let them get comfortable though! Just three minutes later, Quinlan Bairstow stepped up for the green, red & white, finding the back of the old onion bag to square things up at 1–1!

The arm wrestle continued into the second quarter, before another Square decided it was his turn to get involved! Angus 'Gus' Square struck at the 10-minute mark to restore Mines’ advantage and put them back in front 2–1! But again, the lead lasted barely long enough for Miners to enjoy it! Just two minutes later, Bairstow struck again! His second of the game dragged YMHC back onto level terms at 2–2, and suddenly we had a genuine Finals battle on our hands!

🔥 Four goals in an entertaining opening half, and at halftime absolutely nothing separated them!

YMHC were battling some adversity, with exciting young YM product Rhoan Neighbour suffering from the effects of heat stroke and spending a considerable amount of time on the sidelines trying to recover. His absence at times was certainly noticeable. To YM’s credit, they continued to throw everything at Mines, but with a place in the next round up for grabs, somebody needed to stand up and break the deadlock.

Enter Rhett Sowden!

Five minutes into the third quarter, Sowden found the breakthrough Mines had been searching for, putting the navy blue & white ahead for the third time in the contest, after a ball took a deflection of a YM player on a penalty corner strike from Sowden.

🔥 Mines 3–2! The crowd was palpable! This time, however, there would be no immediate YM response.

The final quarter became a battle of nerve as YMHC searched desperately for a third equaliser, while Mines knew they were just one quarter of hockey away from keeping their season alive. Neighbour did his best to return to the action, but with everything on the line, Mines held firm!

👏 Bairstow was enormous for YMHC, his two goals earning him the umpires’ three votes, while Xander Walters and Lucas Po***ck were also terrific for the green, red & white. For Mines, match-winner Rhett Sowden collected the three votes, with fellow goal scorers Maslin Square and Angus Square rounding out their best!
When the final whistle eventually sounded, it was Mines who had survived an absolute beauty, 3–2!

For YMHC, it brings the curtain down on their J9/12 Boys campaign after pushing Mines all the way in a contest that could easily have fallen either way. They certainly made Miners earn every bit of their place in the next round!

🔥 And for some of these young men, Finals hockey is only just beginning! Several will now turn their attention to the Senior Men’s Finals, getting the opportunity to test themselves alongside — and against — the bigger boys when the heat gets turned up another notch!

Mines march on, YMHC bow out with their heads held high, and if this is a glimpse of the next generation coming through our Senior ranks, the future looks pretty bloody exciting! 🏑🔥

🏑JUNIOR ELIMINATION FINAL RESULTS – J9/12 GIRLS 🏑

CBC and Pegasus took to the field at 11:00am on Sunday morning for their sudden-death Elimination Final, with CBC carrying the stronger form line through 2026, and looking to make that count when it mattered most.

Pegasus however had other ideas! From the opening whistle, the flying horsies came out with enormous intent, putting CBC under pressure early and making it very clear they weren’t simply there to make up the numbers! It wasn’t long before Bree Cruickshank opened proceedings, finding the back of the old onion bag and giving Pegs the perfect start! 🔥 Pegasus 1–0!

The early goal gave Pegasus a sniff, and suddenly they were everywhere! Ella King was next to strike, doubling the advantage and putting CBC on the back foot, before Destiny Chisholm joined the party to make it 3–0! CBC were shell-shocked, and Pegasus had the belief that it was all still possible! Cruickshank was causing all sorts of headaches up front, and before the halftime whistle sounded, she struck again to complete her double and remarkably send Pegasus into the break with a 4–0 lead!

🔥 Four goals in one half of sudden-death Finals hockey! Pegs had one foot in the next round, but with an entire half still to play, CBC weren’t done yet!

With their season hanging by a thread, CBC came out after the break determined to make a contest of it. Lia Kao was outstanding as she tried to drag her side back into the game, while Neve Reed and Addison Bowie were also having plenty of influence as CBC began to turn the momentum their way.

Reed eventually gave the collegians some reward, converting from a penalty corner to make it 4–1 and offering CBC a glimmer of hope! But if CBC were going to produce one of the great Finals comebacks, they were going to have to find a way past fill-in GK Kye Morgan!

The Pegasus goalkeeper was superb between the posts, producing some terrific saves as CBC threw everything they could, and the kitchen sink! Morgan’s performance was instrumental in ensuring Pegs maintained their advantage, while Tatiana Kassey-Hona was another who stood tall as Pegasus absorbed the second-half pressure.

The umpires certainly agreed with what we were seeing! Cruickshank, Morgan and Kassey-Hona were judged Pegasus’ best three on the day, while Kao, Reed and Bowie earned the votes for CBC.

👏 When the final whistle sounded, Pegasus had done it! Their incredible four-goal opening half proved impossible to reel in, sending the girls in red through with a 4–1 victory and bringing CBC’s 2026 campaign to an end.

CBC will undoubtedly be disappointed after putting together the stronger season of the two sides leading into the clash, but Finals hockey can be brutal! On Sunday, Pegasus produced their best when there was absolutely no tomorrow, and they thoroughly deserved their place in the next round.

🔥 Pegasus march on, their season is alive, and after a performance like that, they might just be starting to believe!

🏑 JUNIOR ELIMINATION FINAL RESULTS – J3/8 BOYS 🏑

At 9:45am, Mines and YMHC took to the field for what promised to be a blockbuster Elimination Final...and it certainly delivered!

Mines went into the clash as slight favourites based on their form throughout 2026, but once the whistle blew, that counted for very little.

Both teams came to play!

Mines initially had the better of the attacking exchanges, but YM stood tall at the back, repelling attempt after attempt and refusing to let Miners settle. Then YM kicked into gear, led by the super-talented Harrison ‘Harry’ Cresp. Harry was on a mission to drive his team forward, and after several chances went begging for the green, white and red, he decided to take matters into his own hands! Cresp threaded his way through the strong Mines defence, rolled onto the right-hand side of the circle and absolutely punished the ball into the bottom-left corner!

🔥 YMHC 1–0! The crowd erupted as YM drew first blood!

Mines responded quickly, with Lachlan ‘Lachie’ Hough stepping up to level the scores, but the momentum swung again when Cresp struck for a second time to give YM an unlikely 2–1 lead! YM had a sniff. They were leading against arguably one of the season’s most consistent teams, but were Mines going away quietly? Never!

Up stepped Caleb Treen, producing a barnstorming run of his own before finding the back of the old onion bag to send the sides into halftime locked at 2–2! We were in for a huge second half. With 24 minutes remaining, it really was anybody’s game, and we settled in for some mayhem! Mines eventually found another gear, with their leg speed beginning to prove difficult for the young YM outfit to contain. Treen again drove hard at the circle with eyes only for goal, converting to put The Big M’s little men ahead 3–2!

As we entered the final stanza, YM needed to summon everything they had to find an equaliser and keep their season alive. Instead, Mines piled on the pressure. Much of their attack began with Reuben Square from the back, before working through Hough and Treen further up the ground, forcing YM into counter-attacking hockey for much of the final quarter.

Hough’s relentless forward pressure was eventually rewarded with his second goal, stretching the margin and putting Mines within touching distance of the win. But he wasn’t finished! Hough found the old onion bag once more to complete a memorable afternoon and send Mines through with a hard-fought 5–2 victory!

👏 YMHC can hold their heads high. They took it right up to Mines and gave them a genuine scare at both 1–0 and 2–1, showing plenty of fight throughout the contest. YM were particularly well served by Harry Cresp, Hendrik English and Lewis Rothen, while Mines had outstanding performances from Caleb Treen, Lachie Hough and Reuben Square.

🔥 Mines march on to the decider, and those three names could well have a major say when the business end of the season continues this weekend!

🏑 JUNIOR ELIMINATION FINAL RESULTS – J3/8 GIRLS 🏑

A glorious morning greeted our juniors for yesterday’s Elimination Finals, with the J3/8 Girls taking to the field at 8:30am for a sudden-death clash between Norths and YMHC!

YMHC came out with a spring in their step and quickly made it clear they weren’t there just to make up the numbers — they came to play!

The game was end-to-end for much of the first half, before YM’s Paige Linton finally broke the deadlock to put her side in front.

That lead was short-lived though, with Halle Worthington weaving her way through the circle before coolly slotting home the equaliser for Norths!

At 1–1 deep into the fourth quarter, the dreaded Golden Goal overtime was looming large, with neither side able to find the breakthrough.

Then, with just 60 seconds remaining, Linton stepped up!

Picking up the ball down the right-hand side, she sliced her way through the Norths defence before coolly finding the bottom corner to put YMHC ahead 2–1 and send them through to the big dance!

Linton was well supported by Emma Needham and Makaydee, while Norths trio Halle Worthington, Briony Holdaway and Lily Scruth battled hard all morning in what a terrific contest between the two sides was.

👏 Congratulations to Norths on their season, while YMHC now advance to this weekend’s decider, where a strong CBC outfit awaits!
