⛓️ Zercher deadlift — connect the whole body

The Zercher position puts the load in front of the body, demanding a strong relationship between feet, hips, trunk, shoulders and arms.

You’re essentially teaching the body:

Ground → feet → legs → hips → trunk → upper body → load

That has a beautiful crossover to BJJ: lifting, carrying, framing, underhooks, body locks and maintaining posture while someone is trying to fold or rotate you.

🏃 Sprinting — elastic transmission + rhythm

Sprinting adds the opposite quality: rapid force transmission.

The foot strikes the ground, the leg and hip organise, the pelvis and trunk transfer the impulse, while the arms counterbalance and contribute to rhythm.

It’s not just “leg training.” It’s a high-speed conversation between the foot, ankle, knee, hip, pelvis, trunk and opposite shoulder/arm.

That coordination matters in BJJ when you need to suddenly bridge, scramble, pe*****te space, change direction or recover your base.

🔥 Standing ab wheel — resisting the chain breaking

The standing rollout is almost the perfect complement.

Rather than creating movement through the spine, you’re asking the body to maintain a connected shoulder–ribcage–pelvis relationship while the arms move away from the centre.

The challenge becomes:

Can I transmit force through the limbs without the trunk leaking energy?

That’s hugely relevant to BJJ—especially when pushing, pulling, posting, framing or resisting an opponent trying to separate your hips from your upper body.

🥋 Put the three together

Zercher deadlift = produce & transmit force
Sprint = transmit force quickly
Standing ab wheel = maintain the connection under lengthening

Together they develop a very BJJ-relevant quality:

The ability to organise the body as one kinetic chain, rather than a collection of individual muscles.

And perhaps that’s the fundamental application of strength & conditioning for grappling: not simply becoming stronger, but becoming better at directing force through the entire body while maintaining structure, breathing, balance and adaptability. ⛓️‍💥🥋

Today the KVPS tennis team came RUNNER UP in NSW in the PSSA Victor J Kelly Cup!!!

114 schools competed in this statewide knockout competition which started in Feb this year.

KV were narrowly defeated by Gunnedah South in the final : 4 sets, 31 games to 4 sets, 26 games! We were so very close.

We have not made it to this level since 1993 when the KV team won it! We are SO very proud of these kids and this remarkable achievement!

How inspiring it is to see someone in their 80s confidently sprinting, and how that really highlights that the human body can stay capable when we keep challenging it. And that exercise isn’t just about the now. It’s also about the later, like every bit of regular movement is a small investment in keeping the freedom to move tomorrow.Aging happens, but continuing to move well is a choice, and it’s one worth celebrating.Big shout out to Keith who continues to challenge himself and inspire those around him 👊
