UNSW Redback Racing

UNSW Redback Racing is a student led project that designs, builds and races an open wheeled race car

Located within the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of New South Wales, the UNSW Redback Racing Formula SAE team welcomes UNSW students from all disciplines across the university. The team designs, constructs and races a small open wheeled race car and competes against all major Australian and international universities at the annual Formula SAE-Australasia competition, run by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Australasia.

2026 has been a big year for our powertrain department as we tackle making our own modules for RB26. Bambu Lab 3D has been key this year, as we use their H2D printer and filament to prototype our specialised prints. We use their PC-FR specialised filament for its flame-retardant and electrical-insulating properties. Most of our 3D-printed parts have been used for internal structures and electrical insulation. This is important in keeping our accumulator, a high-voltage battery, safe and secure. 🔋⚡

We have also used BambuLab filaments to create our fan inlets and outlets - it was a process that took several prototyping iterations to find the sweet spot for the perfect RB26 fan shroud geometry.🛠

McConaghy Boats has allowed the Composites, Chassis and Aerodynamics teams to utilise their workshop spaces, ovens, and spray booths which have contributed to our aerodynamic component moulds and first monocoque chassis. The Redback Racing Women’s Working Group (WWG) is excited to launch our two-session Driver Academy this Week 6! Taught directly by team drivers and representatives, you’ll learn the fundamentals of race driving, race engineering, and vehicle dynamics—complete with simulator practice and real track time!

✨ No prior experience required! This event is 100% beginner-friendly and designed to teach you the basics from scratch.

🎟️ COST: FREE (Hyperkarting track session is fully covered by us!)
⚠️ EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI) ONLY: This event is tailored to support and empower female participants in STEM and motorsport, but is open to all skill levels and applicants. Last month, Redback Racing hosted the Women's Working Group, an initiative dedicated to empowering women to pursue engineering pathways. This hands-on workshop gave attendees the opportunity to connect with team members, resolve software-related inquiries, and gain insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of a Redback Racing Software Engineer.
