Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend an archery seminar in Melbourne with George "GRIV" Ryals IV, one of the most influential figures in modern archery. With over 25 years of experience as a professional archer, coach, industry designer, and educator, George has coached national champions, world record holders, and international-level athletes. He is a former USA Archery Paralympic Head Coach and recipient of both USA Archery and U.S. Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year honours. It was a privilege to learn from someone who has made such a significant contribution to the sport.
One of the biggest takeaways for me was gaining an insight into international-level competition and learning how those same principles can be applied at every stage of an archer's development. George had a great way of explaining both compound and recurve shooting in simple, practical terms that anyone could understand.
The seminar covered tuning equipment for forgiveness and consistency, developing a positive mindset, and learning how to enjoy archery even on your toughest days on the range. Hearing George's experiences as both a coach and competitor reinforced the importance of keeping archery fun while still striving to improve.
I'm looking forward to bringing these new ideas, skills, and experiences back to Koondrook Barham Archers and sharing them with our members to help everyone enjoy the sport and continue developing their archery journey.
