Voice of Flinders street 12/12/2023

Commuters through Flinders St Station in Melbourne VIC may have come across Laurence Hewson ... the new Metro Trains Melbourne platform announcer who is adding some spice to the daily commute. Whilst his social media popularity has gone through the roof, there are some interesting learnings that we can apply to workplace safety and wellbeing programs.

Platform announcements are there for public safety. They are important messages that regretfully often fall on deaf ears as people wander through the station with their heads buried deep into their phones.

What Laurence is doing is disrupting that behaviour, or people's Autopilot in Move 4 Life language. He's commanding people's attention through humour and weaving safety messaging in and amongst his announcements. Well done Metro Trains Melbourne for supporting him and not shutting him down.

What safety or wellbeing messaging do you issue that could do with some spice? Do you use stylised generic images in your print material or have you gone to the effort of professionally photographing your staff so they are the feature? Is your video collateral humorous or that little bit different to grab employee's attention? Are you using social media to create message momentum?

We love working with our customers to figure out sticky ways to sell the message. What are your favourite ideas?

Voice of Flinders street Laurence Hewson is the Leading Station Assistant at Melbourne's Flinders Street Station, and he's going viral for his upbeat and informative platform announcements.

What are everyone's thoughts on this coaching opportunity? Whilst we love this sort of exchange at work (I'm sure it was during some down-time and didn't delay the departure of the plane), we can't help but think there was a vital coaching tip missing ... and hate to think what twisting technique is used by this guy when loading baggage onto the plane.

A great example by Weir Minerals in the use of Move 4 Life in the wellbeing space!

Whilst we have always traditionally been called in to curb musculoskeletal sprain & strain injuries and produce a ROI in the cost of these injuries, we are increasingly being called upon to support the health and wellbeing efforts like at Weir.

Insightful HSE leaders have called us a "bridge" between safety and wellbeing, which is a unique position to be in, and one that we relish. We love the partnership we have formed with Weir and look forward to marching across APAC together.

If you would like to build the physical wellbeing of your workforce, reduce sprains and strains or futureproof your ageing workforce, be sure to get into contact with Terry Wong or David Witty.

Over the last 4 days, we were at the 23rd World Congress on Safety and Health at Work at the ICC Sydney. We held workshops on "building movement intelligence to help futureproof your ageing workforce", Terry made his moderating debut with a 90-minute symposium on musculoskeletal disorders along with panelists from all over the world, we spoke on the Innovators Showcase on "making safety programs stick" and spoke to people from all around the globe at our stand in the Exhibition Hall. It's been a great week. Thank you to everyone who came and said hi!

Trying to walk 10,000 steps a day? Good news - science says you only need 4000 11/08/2023

"New study reveals less than 4000 steps a day needed for health benefits" is a headline you may have seen recently. Like all good headlines, they are designed to capture attention. Delve a little deeper into the research and surprise, surprise the more steps you do, the better it is for you.

It does raise a question though ... would lowering the daily step recommendation/perception from 10,000 to 4,000 steps result in people doing more steps overall?

Always great to receive unsolicited feedback. 3 hours in a MOVE Training session and 4 months' worth of chronic back pain gone!

The most encouraging thing is that this employee figured out "why" she was in so much pain herself (with some carefully constructed discovery-based direction) ... and executed a self-directed "change" with impressively positive results.

Improving the way you move is a behaviour like anything else. Helping employees create sustainable changes for the better is what Move 4 Life is all about.

Eleven minutes of exercise a day may help counter the effects of sitting 08/12/2020

I reckon we can all find 11 minutes. Let's be bold and round it out to 15 even! And no ... the walk between your chair and fridge doesn't count ;-)

Eleven minutes of exercise a day may help counter the effects of sitting But the sweet spot for physical activity and longevity seems to be about 35 minutes a day of brisk walking or other moderate activities, no matter how many hours someone sat.

Same-same-but-different. A photo from Super Retail Group's Altona site. Here's the team doing their daily 60-second Investment with social distancing in practice. When you are dealing with extraordinary times, sometimes it's best to keep doing the ordinary things that work - especially ones that help employees feel good and prevent injury!
