Friends of Kevin Hoffman Walk Kevin Hoffman Walk: An Aussie native garden walking trail, east side of Hovells Creek, Lara, Victoria

This tranquil trail, which is approximately 900 metres in length, stretches along the east side of Hovells Creek between Station Lake Road and Flinders Avenue in Lara. It was created by Lara resident Kevin Hoffman back in 1970 and over the following 40 plus years, he landscaped and beautified the area, creating a walk that is filled with numerous Australian native plants and indigenous vegetation. With supporters along the way, Kevin has created a walk that locals and many visitors far and wide have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy in the years to come.

📸 Announcing Our 2026 Photo Competition Winners!

We are thrilled to officially announce the winners of this year’s Kevin Hoffman Walk Photo Competition theme “The Magic of the Walk”, celebrated at our Winners Event on Wednesday night, 16 September.

It was a fantastic evening of photography, conversation and community … but more on that later ! Today, it is all about celebrating our talented photographers and officially releasing our 2027 Kevin Hoffman Walk Calendar. 📅

🥇 1st Place & Cover Winner – Julie-Ann Ricci
A very special congratulations to Julie-Ann, who is certainly no stranger to our competition. This is her fourth time entering and her second time taking out the coveted calendar cover! What a wonderful achievement.

🥈 2nd Place – Julie Eckstein
And what a way to make your competition debut — Julie is a first-time entrant!

🥉 Equal 3rd Place – Helen Steer & Jo Readings
Remarkably, both Helen and Jo are also first-time entrants. Congratulations!

We also congratulate our other featured photographers whose beautiful images appear in the 2027 calendar: Erin van der Veen, Graham Lee, Estelle Gardiner, Yvonne Verheem, Erin Hearns and Sam Das, four or whom are also first-time entrants.

👏 CONGRATULATIONS to all our winners!

🗓️ And, of course, the 2027 Kevin Hoffman Walk Calendar is OUT NOW!

Calendars are available for $15 from newsXpress Lara and can also be purchased through our online shop, making them more accessible to our friends and supporters across Australia. Local pickup is available for online purchases.

And while we celebrate this year’s beautiful collection of images, it is never too early to start looking through the lens for next year!

Bursts of Yellow!

What a beautiful time for an afternoon wander along the Walk.

There are so many lovely bursts of yellow in bloom at the moment, including:

Guinea Flower, Melaleuca, Grey Cottonhead, Eutaxia — also known as Egg and Bacon Plant, which is such a fun name — Acacia, Grevillea flexuosa and Banksia.

A cheerful little reminder to slow down and notice what is flowering right now.

Have you spotted the new Kevin Hoffman Walk sign at the Station Lake Road end?

A big thank you to the City of Greater Geelong for updating this sign. It looks fresh, clear and welcoming, and it is a lovely improvement to this entrance of the Walk.

Next time you are passing by, take a look. It is looking great.

Hello Spring!

Spring has arrived and the Walk is beginning to show those lovely little signs of seasonal change.

Fresh growth, new flowers, brighter colour and a feeling that the garden is waking up again after winter.

It is a beautiful time of year to slow down, wander the paths and see what is starting to bloom.

And don’t forget to tune in to the sounds of the birds and see how many calls your recognise.

Celebrate the Magic of the Walk

You are invited to join us for our 2026 Photo Competition Winners Event, as we celebrate this year’s winning images and officially reveal the 2027 Kevin Hoffman Walk Calendar.

We will also be launching two new packs of Kevin Hoffman Walk cards, featuring more beautiful images from the Walk.

Wednesday 16 September 2026
Lara Sporting Club
Doors open 6.45 pm for a 7.00 pm start
Light Supper will be served | Drinks at Bar Prices

Our guest speaker for the evening will be Jim Szabo, President of Corio Bay Camera Club and Life Member of Lara Sporting Club.

Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a relaxed evening celebrating the Walk, our photographers and the beauty captured through their lenses.

The weeds have gone nuts!

The weeds have gone nuts down at the Walk, so this Sunday’s Working Bee will be all about weeding.

Come along and help us tidy things up:

Sunday 30 August
8.30 am – 10.30 am
Meet at the green container, Walkers Road entrance

Stay for as long as you like — one hour, the full two hours, or whatever you can manage.

Please BYO gloves, your preferred gardening hand tool and a bucket to collect all those pesky weeds. We do, however, have some hand tools available for use.

Do you enjoy weeding, or are you more of a reluctant-but-helpful weeder? Either way, we would love to see you there.

Just send us a message or email to let us know if you will be there on Sunday.

A winter walk reminds us that beauty does not always need to be bright.

There is something calming about the garden in winter. The colours are quieter, the light is gentler and the little details seem to stand out even more, especially when you take the time to look for them.
