Rego and green slip: about $1,000 a year. Before your car moves a metre.
A mid-size car's NSW rego runs around $460. The average green slip is over $600. Older than five years? Add a pink slip. And that's before fuel, insurance, tyres or a single service.
Here's the part that matters. NSW charges the motor vehicle tax by weight: the heavier the car, the more you pay. And the green slip exists because cars injure people. The state already knows mass is the risk. Cyclist deaths rose 32.4% in the 12 months to December 2025.
An e-bike? About $15 of power a year. It costs money too, you buy it and service it, but 25 kilos don't need a thousand-dollar permission slip.
None of this is your fault. That's policy. Our streets were built so most trips need a car, and the cheap way out was left unsafe.
We're not against rego. Our proposal: L1 assists to 32 km/h with a free ID plate on the frame and a one-day course. L2 does 60 km/h, roads only, licence and affordable rego. Accountability, not revenue. Match the rule to the risk.
