A nice breeze greeted the sailors yesterday. Warmish from the NW was a nice change from drifters. The Tackers group had a good sail inside the bay with Green fleet heading out even further into the river with a longer course. It was probably the best breeze we have had for our group with 8 knots and a few gusts at 10. It was a big challenge lining up for the practice starts. Our newbie sailor Gail did a great job for her first sail. Although capsizing twice she was able to get the boat up and get going again with a grin on her face. The five Sabres had a great tussle around the course with three finishing within a boat length. Back ashore we shared what we have learnt. A couple of people commented that there is so much to learn. There’s agreement there and even experienced sailors usually pick up something new each time they sail. It’s one of the joys of the sport.
Afternoon racing saw 14 Sabres sail the last two pennant races for the season. It was a challenging day for our RO James as the wind was fickle and wandering. In the first race Jo, Dan and Matt exchanges places at the front of the fleet with Jo grabbing the lead where it mattered on the last triangle. There was only one point separating Dan and Chris for the pennant so Dans 2nd place with Chris back in 7th pushed him to the lead. With one race to go Dan needed another good result. The wind decided to go wonky and there was a battle between the SE Seabreeze and a stronger NW which left the fleet in clumps all over the course. Eventually the NW won out and came in strong. Chris showed his skill in picking the shifty conditions and went on to win with Jason in second and Dan third. Chris had sailed consistently all season so he was able to drop his 7th and claim a well deserved overall pennant. In the handicap pennant, Phill put together two good results for the day to claim the top spot from Mark 2 points back in second and Rueslan a further two points back in third.
Our last event for the year is prize night on 2nd May at BYC bottom bar.
Matt.

There was a good roll up for the final race in the Nibbs Electrical Twilight Series last night. The start was downwind for a change and it was a bit of a crush at the first mark. Reflection was first on elapsed time with Karera winning on handicap. The overall winner of the series pennant was Reflection. After the race crews enjoyed an end of season function at MYCT that was enjoyed by all who attended.

The second and final race in the North Sails Channel Cup to Green Island was held last Saturday. Unfortunately there was virtually no wind which resulted in the course being shortened near Piersons Point. Boats, including some who cruised down, gathered in Quarantine Bay for the post race bbq for which the weather was ideal. ‘Karera’ was the winner of Race 2 with ‘Sundance’ second and ‘Bahloo’ third. The winner of the Cup was ‘Bahloo’

A great days sailing on Sunday 22nd. 5 Optis were out in the Tackers program and they were enjoying the warm air and gentle breeze. Green fleet sailors were keen for more starting practice and gaining experience sailing a course. We had 4 Sabres,a few Pacers and 2 Sabots with Ella out in her new boat. Molly showed skill way beyond her age in grabbing the start and it took a whole triangle for a Sabre to catch her. The NE wind eventually faded and we returned
to shore still eager for more.
The wind for the afternoon was initially a patchy NE. After waiting for ages our RO for the day, Graeme, was rewarded with the wind swinging south at around 7 knots and we were underway. John Ceruty picked the start well and hooked into the first puff coming down the course, tacked over and it was chase him round the rest of the course. Dan ,Matt and Shane were in hot pursuit but could make little impression on his lead and that’s how they finished. Race 2 saw the wind back a little to the east and Dan skipped out with a commanding lead at the top mark. Chris and Matt pushed each other with Matt just managing to grab second spot. Dan’s second and first placing really pushed him up the pennant and is only one point behind Chris with last two races next weekend. Andrew hooked into a nice westerly touch up the last work which pushed him in to fourth in last race. Best PB for the day goes to Rueslan with a fifth in second race ,with quite a few hot shots behind him. On handicap Rueslan certainly grabbed the chocolates with a second and first placing. The handicap pennant is wide open with the first 5 boats on 3 points apart. Mark is hanging on to the lead by one point so next week he’s sure to be keen to finish well.

Report on sailing 15.3.26 at BYC

A bright and light wind day gave the green fleet excellent conditions on Sunday morning. A dozen boats joined in for some starting practice and simulated racing. Lots of good sailing with Hainsy winning the first race and Patricia the second. Lots of great fun.

The afternoon saw the Eric Szabo memorial with two back to back races led by our RO for the day John Mills.
Keel boats were away first with a pursuit format in a beautiful 10 knot SSE breeze.
The dinghies followed with 15 Sabres along with a Sharpie, Heron and Pacer to give a great fleet for the memorial event.
John Ceruty was the first to top mark with Chris and Dan on his heels. John got rolled by both down the first reach and that is how they finished with Chris holding a small lead till the finish.
Race 2 had the wind backing to SE before the start meant that those who went right off the start missed the slow shift to the left. John Ceruty was leading but missed seeing the new top mark to the east and continued upwind on port to find the fleet had peeled off left. Dan was first around followed by Matt W. with Jason and Shane close behind. The sloppy waves coupled with the shift to the east meant the waves were near on the bow so it payed to power up, go lower and punch through the slop. On the run to the finish Dan and Matt W. had a neck and neck battle to the line with Matt just a fraction in front at the finish.
That left 3 boats tied on 5 points- Chris, Matt and Dan with Matt winning on a countback.
A great atmosphere back at the club with keelboat and dinghy crews mingling at the free BBQ kindly donated by Andrew Szabo.
As usual, Andrew had plenty of spot prizes for sailors and volunteers alike with BYC chipping in with vouchers.
Overall the day was a fitting memorial to Eric and the memories we have of him as a dinghy sailor, keel boat crew ,club volunteer and all round inspiration to those who knew him.
Matt.
