π A New Era for Junior Rugby in the Mackay District
The newly elected Mackay District Junior Rugby Union committee met this week and is excited about the future of our game across the region.
Representatives from Whitsunday, Bowen, Moranbah, Brothers and Slade Point came together with a shared vision: to build a stronger, more connected and more sustainable future for junior rugby.
One of the key developments is the transition to a club-based structure in Mackay. We are pleased to confirm that Brothers, Slade Point and Mackay City will operate as independent junior clubs moving forward. More clubs means more opportunities for children and families to get involved in our great game.
The committee also identified two key strategic priorities for the region:
β
Referee and Match Official Development
We recognise that referees are critical to the future of the game. Over the coming months we will be investing in referee education, supporting young referees and creating clearer pathways for match officials across the district.
β
Growing Female Participation
Female rugby continues to be one of the biggest growth opportunities for our sport. We will be working closely with clubs, schools, Queensland Rugby and community partners to create more opportunities for girls to play, develop and stay involved in rugby.
There is a lot of work ahead, but there is also enormous opportunity. The committee looks forward to working with clubs, volunteers, players, parents and supporters to continue growing rugby across Mackay, Bowen, Moranbah and the Whitsundays.
