Mandurah Offshore Fishing & Sailing Club has launched a new three-day regatta, branded Sail Mandurah
“The theme of Sail Mandurah in March will match the club’s new motto of “Fun on and off the water”, commented Commodore Bryan Pemberton. “Of course, fun means different things to different people, but the vibe of the regatta will be relaxed, and there will be a strong social side after racing. The inclusion of cruising monohulls and catamarans doing passage courses will suit a family and friends
style of competition.”
Two fleets that will be taking the racing more seriously are the Sports Boats and Soling classes, both of which will be competing for State Championship honours. The Sports Boats will sail a mixture of windward-leeward and passage courses, whilst the Solings will be do a combination of windward-leewards and triangular courses. Mandurah, the estuary city with waterways all around, has long been a popular family holiday destination for Western Australians. The club wants to introduce visiting sailors to the superb sailing conditions on Comet Bay and beyond, its outstanding clubhouse facilities and modern floating marina. The club’s marina has just been granted a four-and-a-half Gold Anchor rating, the highest rating issued to any club in WA.
“Because we control our own bar, restaurant and marina, the club is able to set the Sail Mandurah in March entry fee at only $120 per boat”, explained Commodore Pemberton. “With free berthing thrown in, that is fantastic value.”
Asked about the proximity of the regatta to Geographe Bay Race Week, Commodore Pemberton explained:
“We have the greatest respect for the great work done by the Busselton club, and have been careful not to tread on their toes, by targeting different classes. We start a week after Geo Race Week finishes, so there is potential for boats to do our regatta on their way back from Geographe Bay, much as Airlie Beach Race Week flows into Hamilton Island and then on to the Magnetic Island regatta.”
