This morning I recorded an episode for Arrive Yoga by Serena Louise Yoga with Prue from Earth Altering | Prudence Rustean

We spoke about healing from illness, the earth as a creative collaborator, and how closely those two things are woven together — gathering, community, and the way both hold us as we find our way back to ourselves. Afterwards I walked through the woods in Farnsfield, and right in front of my step was this conker.

A pattern I see often in session.

The sluggishness. The flatness. A quiet resistance to connecting, to moving, to beginning anything at all.

In Ayurveda, this has a name — tamas, one of three gunas, or qualities of mind. Rajas moves us. Sattva clarifies. Tamas slows everything, until the mind stops asking for anything.

Tamas rarely arrives alone. It often shows up alongside excess kapha — the dosha of earth and water, governing structure, stillness, and our resistance to change.

Neither is a flaw. They’re signals — the body asking to be met with warmth, not force.

What tends to help:

loose days → structure
heavy, oily food → light, warm meals
hours of screens → sunlight, fresh air
stillness → morning movement

Small, steady shifts toward warmth and movement. Not the whole rebuild at once.

Something small for the mornings that ask too much of you.

An apple, stewed slow with cinnamon until it softens. Ayurveda calls this grounding for vata — the restless, scattering energy that anxiety rides in on. Where raw apple is crisp and quick, cooked apple is warm and slow. It doesn’t wake the nervous system. It settles it.

Keep one on hand before the big day, or any day the mind won’t stay still.

Nirartha.

Sanskrit for without meaning — without purpose.

It’s easy to brush things under the rug. A few weeds at the edge of the garden don’t seem urgent. Ignore them a little longer and they spread — quietly, then all at once — until you can’t see what you planted at all.

We do this with thoughts too. The small ones we don’t look at, the worry we say we’ll deal with later, the feeling we push aside because there isn’t time. None of it disappears. It just keeps growing, unseen.

Ayurveda has a word for this: ama — what hasn’t been digested, processed, or let go. Not just food. Emotion. Experience. Thought. Left unattended, it clouds clarity the same way weeds choke a garden.

The practice isn’t to have no thoughts. It’s noticing which ones are nirartha, and choosing something else instead.

A few small ones to start with:

“They just bought the car I’ve been dreaming about. I’m so jealous.” → Well done to them. That took work.

“I can’t believe how slow this person is driving.” → Their pace isn’t something I can control. Let it be.

Small edits. Repeated enough, they change the shape of a day.

Let’s talk about belief, and about alternative therapies.

Sometimes in life it’s easy to feel lost, or off track — disconnected from what we actually believe, carrying ideas that were handed to us rather than chosen by us.

Yoga philosophy has always held a place for this. Long before “wellness” was a word, the ancient yogis treated the practice itself as a tool for enlightenment — not escape from the world, but a clearer way of seeing it. In the Vedic tradition this is svadhyaya, self study: using breath, movement, and stillness to study the mind and return to what is true, rather than what is simply familiar.

This is also the foundation of yoga therapy as an alternative approach to healing — not a replacement for fixing what’s broken, but a practice for remembering what we already believe, underneath the noise.

Nearly eight weeks away from home now. Long enough that people keep remarking on how quickly it’s gone and long enough to be more aware of how quickly our girls grow from day to day!

In the Vedic tradition, time is not a straight line — it moves in cycles, kāla, something to be met rather than mastered. The Gita speaks of time as vast, indifferent, the great dissolver of all things. It puts our small daily urgency in a different light.

It has me thinking about how we actually use our time. I don’t think it’s about doing more. I think it’s about holding space — for ourselves, for the things that matter — rather than grinding through every task until we’ve overstretched past what we can hold.

When we do that, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important. And what’s important is different for each of us.

If time feels like it’s slipping too fast, or dragging too slow, the yogic view isn’t to try and control it. It’s to come back to the breath, and to presence — the one place where time softens. Less measuring it, more meeting it.

A daily reminder: we cannot control how fast or slow time moves. We can only control how we use it. Be selective with who, and what, you give your time to xx

The hamstrings are one of the body’s longest and most complex muscle groups, crossing both the hip and the knee — built for stability as much as movement. In yoga therapy, this is also where fear is often held. Tight, guarded hamstrings can be less about flexibility and more about a body bracing to run.
