Our interview with the Canberran sensation Duncanoo didgeridoo dunk-a-noodle Duncan Cockburn for our upcoming The Locals friendly competition...
When and how did you start kettlebell lifting?
In the late 90’s I had a plate loaded kettlebell handle welded and started doing swings. This was after reading an article by pavel in milo magazine. It slowly developed from there and I contacted Stojak around 2013 and started training more specifically for the competitive lifts.
Where and how often do you train?
I train in my garage. Current training is based in 3 kettlebell/assistance sessions per week with cardio sessions on the other days.
What’s the hardest thing about kettlebell lifting?
While I enjoy training solo it can also be challenging without the camaraderie of doing it with others. Stay tuned on this though.
Describe your proudest lifting moment...
CMS in long cycle. 2x28kg for 56 reps.
What’s your favourite food?
Kotthu rotti - a Sri Lankan an dish
Is coach Stojak a true man amongst men?
No, he’s a manchild and overall a very unwell human.
Long cycle or biathlon?
Long cycle(for now)
Are you 100Strong?
Eyeeeeeeeeees

An interview with Nick about train and our upcoming comp
What motivates you to train and what motivates you to compete??
Initially it was vanity and ego, I wanted to look and feel fit and powerful. Then it became about mastery, trying to get better and test myself in competition. Now it’s it’s become habit, and exercise is part of who I am and kettlebell lifting is the most enjoyable form of lifting for me.
What do you least like about sport and training ??
It’s very monotonous at times, and after the initial gains, progress in numbers is frustratingly hard to come by. As a result it’s easy to burn out mentally and physically if you’re not careful - this has happened to me before, a coach or training partner helps.
Is Top End Pleb a great business idea??
It’s actually terrible. Sounds like plebs in the Northern Territory, my immediate thought is singlets, things and oversized cans of beer (can you tell I’ve never been to the NT?)
Where do you see yourself fitness wise in 20 years from now??
Well I’m already bald and mostly lifting 24 kg kettlebells, which are what masters athletes (over 35s) use, so hopefully about the same overall, with better technique and higher numbers.

WE WANT YOUR VOTE. How do you hold your kettlebell for goblet squats? Seems like we’ve got 3 votes for option 3 on this end 🙋🏽🙋🏼🙋🏻♀️
And for those of you’ve always wondered: how do you even hold the kettlebell to do goblet squats?? You’ve got 3 options. Take your pick!
Option 1: Right side up
Hold the kettlebell by its horns (sides of the handle), pick it up off the ground, and bring it close to your chest.
Option 2: Upside down
Grab the horns of the kettlebell such that the thumbs and index fingers are downwards and your pinky fingers are closer to you. Pick the kettlebell off the ground as you turn it upside down, and bring it to your chest.
Option 3: Like a goblet.. duh
Take the kettlebell by its handle with one hand. Using a bit of power, pull it off the ground while flipping it upside down, then quickly hold one side of the bell with the free hand, followed by the other hand. This option is a little trickier and works only if you’re pretty comfortable with the kettlebell.
So which option do you prefer? Vote in comments!
