💛 Sometimes the best listener has four legs.

They don’t care if you’ve had a bad day. They don’t need you to explain. And they’re usually quite happy just to sit beside you.

Our animals can bring companionship, routine, connection and plenty of reasons to get outside and keep moving. Whether it’s walking the dog, feeding the chooks, heading out to see the horse or simply having a cat curl up beside you, those everyday moments can make a real difference to how we feel.

But today, on R U OK? Day, it’s also a reminder to check in with the humans around us.

If someone seems a little quieter than usual, or just hasn’t seemed themselves lately, take a moment to ask:

“Are you OK?”

You don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes being there and listening is enough.

And if you have a furry, feathered or four-legged mate who makes your days a little better, thank them with an extra pat from us today. 💛

🦷 When a fractured tooth reveals a bigger problem

Team work makes the dream work, here Dr Jonathan and Dr Elise worked hard to remove a painful tooth for this handsome patient. This gelding was referred to us after a fracture was identified in his lower-right canine tooth by our friend Jonny Keen at Equine. Examination confirmed that the fracture extended into the pulp (the sensitive, living tissue inside the tooth).

Because the pulp was exposed and the tooth had significant underlying disease, preserving it with a vital pulpotomy was not a suitable option. Radiographs were taken to assess the full tooth below the gumline and revealed marked changes consistent with EOTRH.

What is EOTRH?

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis is a painful, progressive dental disease that most commonly affects the incisors and canine teeth of older horses.

The disease may cause:

- resorption and weakening of the tooth roots;
- excessive cementum formation around the roots;
- bulbous enlargement of affected teeth;
- inflamed or receding gums;
- loose, fractured or painful teeth; and
- draining tracts or infection around the tooth roots.

In this case, the fractured canine was carefully extracted with a great recovery made by the handsome patient.

One simple way to monitor incisor comfort at home is the carrot test. Offer your horse a firm, whole carrot and observe whether they can grasp and bite through it comfortably. Hesitation, refusal, dropping the carrot or trying to chew it with the cheek teeth may indicate incisor or canine pain.

Horses can continue eating despite significant dental discomfort, so subtle changes matter. Regular dental examinations, and radiographs when indicated, allow us to identify disease below the gum line and make treatment decisions focused on long-term comfort.
