Today we released the National Summer Drowning Toll report. While we saw a 22% reduction in drownings compared to last year, 81 people still lost their lives in our waterways since 1 December 2025. This represents one person drowning almost every single day of summer. We are particularly concerned by several emerging trends: • Older Australians at Risk: Those aged 65+ accounted for 30% (24) of all drowning deaths - the highest of any age group. • Gender Gap: Males continue to be overrepresented, accounting for 91% of summer drowning fatalities. • Regional Trends: Regional Australia accounted for more than half (53%) of drowning deaths. "With warm weather expected to continue into March and April, we strongly encourage people of all ages to follow simple water safety precautions so they can continue to enjoy the water safely, particularly as we head into the Autumn and Easter holiday period" says CEO Dr Justin Scarr.
