This one hit home. š¤ Every race night I'm that mum behind the fence, proud, terrified, and holding my breath until Mikey's back in the pits. Season kicks off tomorrow night. Here we go again! š
Round 1 Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series tomorrow night, Perth Motorplex and I'll be the one behind the fence not breathing.
Let's go Mikey! š
A mother watching her child race is a different kind of brave.
Because she canāt get in the car with him.
She canāt grab the wheel.
She canāt tell him to slow down.
She canāt protect him from whatās waiting in the next corner.
She can only stand thereā¦
and watch.
I donāt know what was happening on the track when I found her.
Maybe her son had just missed a wreck.
Maybe he had just been in one.
Maybe he was out front, and she was watching the biggest moment of his night unfold.
I don't know.
But I knew something was happening.
You could feel it.
And that's what pulled my camera toward her.
Because sometimes the story isn't the car flying around the track.
Sometimes it's the person standing behind the fence, holding her breath, watching the child she raised do something dangerous, something he loves, something that makes her incredibly proud and absolutely terrified all at once.
That's motherhood at the racetrack.
You teach them to be braveā¦
and then you have to stand back and watch them be brave.
