Red flags that your piercer might show that you SHOULD be judging them for:

1- Owning/operating a studio or training apprentices without at least 5 years in the industry. Without experience, the piercer could be passing on improper practices or incorrect information.
2- Ignoring messages or avoiding seeing you for check ups. Your piercer should want you to come back with any issues you present so they can help you!
3- Other services happening in the same room. Piercing using safe practices includes keeping a clean and dedicated space to your service. If you’re being pierced in the middle of a retail shop, hair salon or tattoo studio there is no way to ensure everyone else in the room is following your standards! There’s always a risk of airborne germs impacting a piercing, but having a dedicated space where you can control the environment helps to prevent this.
4- They don’t encourage downsizing after the initial swelling has gone down. Granted, not every piercing needs a downsize, but many do to ensure timely healing. Your piercer should always let you know the healing timeline of your piercing and when you’re due for a downsize.
5- They have artificial nail extensions, wear jewellery on their fingers/wrist or leave long hair unrestrained. Long nails and jewellery around the hands or wrist prevent proper hand hygiene and pose a risk of puncturing gloves (including wedding rings and watches)! Long hair can brush over the piercing introducing bacteria and will contaminate the hair too!
6- They use tools (hemostates, forceps) to insert your jewellery. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes tools are absolutely needed, but, when a piercer uses tools on solid gold it can warp and become damaged. If using a tool to guide jewellery through the channel (besides a taper) you can scratch the surface of the jewellery and the minor scratches can harbour bacteria and cause irritation. If you’re ever unsure if a tool is being used in a safe way - ask!
