Design Thinking is not a workshop. It is the #1 skill of the AI age.

I know. You've sat through the offsite. The sticky notes. The person with the good markers who insisted on "diverging" for ninety minutes. That was never Design Thinking. That was theatre.

Here is what it actually is: a rigorous framework for critical inquiry. A structured way of asking better questions before you reach for an answer. Which happens to be the exact capability that separates leaders who orchestrate AI from leaders who get operated by it.

Here's the thing nobody says out loud. AI does not solve problems. It accelerates the ex*****on of whatever problem you hand it. Ask the wrong question and you will arrive at the wrong destination faster than ever, with a beautiful deck to prove it.

RAND studied why AI projects fail. It's not the algorithm. The number one cause is leaders misunderstanding the problem they asked AI to solve.

Prompt engineering isn't a new skill, by the way. It's critical thinking in a hoodie.

Emerson said the ancestor of every action is a thought. The ancestor of every AI output is the question you asked.

So ask a better one.

Here is what took me until years after my divorce and once I was remarried to admit: I wasn’t building success. I was building safety.

I didn’t see it intellectually. Not as another insight to file away with the others.

I saw it in my bones.

It came at the end of a run of losses so absurd I genuinely believed I was cursed. Eighty to a hundred thousand dollars of my life, gone in pieces. A box of contents that vanished into the back of a taxi. My laptop left on a plane. Priceless heirlooms. My jewellery box lost on a Virgin voyage. My earrings abandoned in a Darth Vader themed hotel room. A diamond ring down an aeroplane toilet. 🚽

Drama after drama after drama, and I kept asking what I had done to deserve it.

It felt so bad I went to an Etsy witch. Yes I even looked at the neuroscience of surrender as I was paying a stranger on the internet to lift a curse, but the truth was I already knew what to do. I had simply lost connection to myself.

Then it landed.

The abundance I was so busy trying to manifest was literally flushing down aeroplane toilets, because the one thing I had never built was the thing that holds abundance in place.

Safety. Self worth.

You cannot keep what you do not believe you are allowed to have.

For years I thought I was trying to earn belonging. To be accepted. To prove myself. But underneath all of it was something far more human.

I was trying to feel safe. Safe in my relationships. Safe in my family. Safe in my business. Safe in my place in the world. Safe in my bones.

I can see now all the ways I worked overtime to create that feeling. I explained myself. I over-delivered. I over-functioned. I became helpful, successful, accommodating, endlessly resourceful.

Now those things weren’t wrong. But somewhere along the way I learned that belonging was something you earned. That safety was conditional. That acceptance was something you worked for.

The painful part wasn’t seeing it. It was realising how exhausted I had become carrying it.

The beautiful part was realising I could put it down.

Here is what I found when I did.

1. Name the need beneath the behaviour.

Every behaviour is trying to solve a problem. People-pleasing, perfectionism, over-achieving. They are often just trying to create safety.

Before you judge yourself, ask: what was I trying to protect? Compassion starts there.

2. Stop confusing belonging with approval.

Approval is external and can be withdrawn. Belonging is internal and cannot. The moment I stopped treating approval as proof of my worth, I became free.

3. Notice the “membership applications”.

Please like me. Please choose me. Please understand me. Please tell me I’m enough. Nobody had asked me to submit them. I was volunteering.

When I stopped applying, I realised I was already in the room.

4. Safety cannot be built on someone else’s opinion.

External validation constantly moves. If your peace depends on everyone agreeing with you, you will never rest.

Real safety is trusting yourself even when someone misunderstands you.

5. Release responsibility for other people’s healing.

I can love people, support them, wish them well. But I cannot heal them. I cannot process their grief or complete their journey. That responsibility belongs to them.

6. Build evidence of safety.

Safety isn’t only a feeling. It’s evidence. So I looked at the facts. People who loved me. Children who needed me. Clients who trusted me. Friends who chose me. A life I had built. The evidence had been there all along. I simply wasn’t looking at it.

7. Issue your own membership card.

I stopped waiting for someone to tell me I belonged. I stopped waiting for a verdict. I stopped waiting for permission.

I issued my own membership card.

Because it was already mine.

Belonging was something I thought you earned. It isn’t.

No application required. No approval needed. Valid for life.

Case dismissed. 💕✨🫀

📚 Looking at this stack of books, I realised something.

I’ve read hundreds, maybe even a thousand books over the years.

These are the ones that stayed.

Not because they taught me how to use AI.

Because they taught me how to think.

And right now, as every second LinkedIn post screams about the latest AI tool, I’m noticing something interesting…
