The story of compounding errors.

I have a client whose boat has a bow thruster - a high power drop-down propeller at the front of the boat which is used to push the nose left or right during docking.

Poor decisions in the manufacture and design of this system meant that water in the forward locker drips onto a control module (which failed after a relatively short time) and the motor (which rusted out quite quickly). That was fixed, and a plastic container placed over the motor to divert the drips.

All was good for some time until a small piece of plastic broke from the protective cover and jammed the bilge pump - whose only job was to pump any accumulated water out of that area. The bilge pump normally has a strainer over the inlet to stop this sort of thing happening but mistake no 2 - no bilge pump strainer.

This last weekend the boat motored to a race in strong seas and pounding waves, leading to quite a bit of water washing over the deck as well as acculating in the forward locker where the bow thruster lives. Because the bilge pump didn't operate, quite a bit of water accumulated, in fact.

The end result is that the electronics drowned, and the bow thruster didn't work when it was needed. Now the owner is facing quite a wait for replacement parts (and quite an expense). All from a few easily avoided mistakes that weren't picked up when the boat was built.

“Most boats are French built cruising boats that have arrived in Australia with NKE already fitted, but there is a good number of class built racing boats that need NKE support.”

“I have been in constant contact with Stéphane, Joël, and Cécile over the years. And now Olivier. I have never had a chance to share a glass of nice French wine, but soon... once we can travel again!”

“I visited the office in Lorient just over 2 years ago. It was just for a day of introductions and some training. I'm looking forward for the chance to spend longer time for some advanced training and installation (especially if it involves the opportunity to go sailing).”

“The worst thing with dealing with the NKE team is not having accented characters on my US format keyboard! It is clumsy to correctly spell French names. (Almost) everybody has accented characters in their name. :(
The funniest NKE story occured only a few months ago. I had a call from someone who had purchased some second hand NKE parts. The parts came from a Class 40 boat that had be siezed by Australian customs and pulled apart in the search for concealed drugs.
We joked that NKE was the choice of drug cartels because you needed a high performance system to evade the authorities.”

"J'ai visité le bureau de Lorient il y a un peu plus de 2 ans. C'était juste pour une journée de présentation et quelques formations. J'attends avec impatience la possibilité de passer plus de temps pour une formation avancée et une installation (surtout si cela implique la possibilité de faire de la voile)."

"Le pire dans les relations avec l'équipe NKE, c'est de ne pas avoir de caractères avec accents sur mon clavier au format américain ! Il est difficile d'écrire correctement les noms français. (Presque) tout le monde a des caractères avec accents dans son nom. :(
L'histoire la plus amusante avec NKE s'est produite il y a quelques mois seulement. J'ai reçu un appel de quelqu'un qui avait acheté des pièces NKE d'occasion. Les pièces provenaient d'un bateau de classe 40 qui avait été saisi par les douanes australiennes et démonté à la recherche de drogues cachées.
Nous avons plaisanté en disant que NKE était le choix des cartels de la drogue parce qu'il fallait un système très performant pour échapper aux autorités."
