Did someone call for a doctor? πŸ§‘β€βš•οΈ

General practitioners from VAHS were among the 50-plus who attended the annual Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Inc Statewide GP Gathering at Cape Schanck 🩺

Attendees shared ideas and challenges in their roles, shared a meditative grounding and yarning session with Mindful Mob Wellness Institute, and heard from a range of guest speakers including VAHS' own Dr Janelle Francis πŸ—£οΈ

With the largest turnout at a GP Gathering yet and range of perspectives shared, we look forward to the continued growth both here at VAHS, and within the wider Aboriginal health sector πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

Meet Kiewa πŸ‘‹

Kiewa Austin-Rioli is a proud Gunditjmara and Tiwi Island woman and the Elder Care Support Connector at VAHS πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈ

In her role, no two days are the same, but some of what she does includes hosting and planning bi-weekly Elders Group sessions, taking Elders on excursions, assisting with medical appointments and referrals, preparing lunches, and much more.

β€œEven when I’m running around non-stop, making lunches, coffees, and teas, its all worth it to see them every single week and have Elders tell me how much this group means to them,” she said.

β€œI can say personally, this is the most rewarding thing I have ever done.”

We are looking for more people like Kiewa to join our Healthy Ageing team at VAHS πŸ§“πŸΎ

If you are looking for truly meaningful, Community-focussed work, are kind, patient, and driven, and hold a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) or equivalent qualification, bring lived experience, Cultural knowledge, or have a genuine commitment to supporting Elders and older people who are willing to undertake training and obtain relevant qualifications, we would love to hear from you!
