She looks beautiful, doesn't she? The Gippsland Lakes.
But navigating this or any bar entrance can be treacherous.
Due to a demand for a bar crossing course specifically for sailors in yachts, Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) and TAFE Gippsland have developed a bespoke course to meet this need.
Metung Yacht Club members are warmly welcomed to participate, as are all members of the public.
The course is over two days on Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10 and will be held at SEAMAC Lakes Entrance.
Friday is a 3.5hr theory session beginning at 1pm. Saturday is a 3.5hr practical session, beginning at 8:30am.
Course cost is $325.
Participants will learn procedures to understand and negotiate any ocean access bar. The course comprises classroom theory, practical on-water demonstrations and introduces the interpretation of bathymetry, weather maps, tide and current considerations and assessment of tide and current conditions at a bar or ocean entrance.
The course contains the following components:
- Voyage planning principles
- How to recognise and utilise Aids to Navigation and understand natural phenomena
- Safe bar crossing protocols
- The importance of correct usage of safety equipment
- Procedures for safe bar crossings
- Boat handling skills
The practical training and assessment session is weather dependent and will only be completed if conditions are within the following limits -
- Daylight hours with good visibility
- Average wave height less than 2 metres
- Wind less than 20 knots from the southerly semi-circle of the compass
- Any conditions which the Trainer believes unsafe or unsuitable

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME A STARTER OF YACHT RACES?
The Metung Yacht Club Sailing Committee invites anyone who would like to assist in starting our regular Saturday races, to come along to the Clubhouse this coming Saturday, September 19.
Those who would like a refresher in the starting procedure are also welcome to attend.
The training will commence at 10am and last for approximately one hour. No preparation required, but for anyone who is interested in doing some preparation, visit the MYC website and read the Sailing Instructions 2026-27, paragraph 11.
This is a great way for you to be involved in sailing and your Club, working in a team of starters who share the responsibility and roster.

2026 Victorian SheSails Award!

Congratulations Ocean Racing Club of Victoria – KISS ALIVE, 2026 SheSails Award recipient.

KISS ALIVE is a "by women, for women" platform coordinating training, sailing and social events to help women discover and grow their keelboat sailing pathways across Victoria. With the revamped 2026 course culminating in a 26nm rally crewed entirely by women as helm, navigator and radio operator, taking the total to 150 women graduated over four years. Beyond training, KISS ALIVE now connects alumni and female keelboat sailors statewide, strengthens ties with clubs through promotional support. From a handful of volunteers on Sand Island to a genuine statewide network, KISS ALIVE has built a lasting, scalable model for growing women's participation in keelboat sailing.

Glenys has been a race official and mentor at MYC regattas.

2026 Victorian Lifetime Achievement Award!

Congratulations Glenys Hitchen, 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

For more than five decades, Glenys has shaped Australian sailing as a competitor, race official and mentor, from Mirror dinghy beginnings in 1969 and international racing at the 1994 J/24 Worlds, to officiating at more than twenty clubs and major events including Finn Masters, ILCA, Tasar and Moth World Championships across six countries. A two-time Victorian Official of the Year, her legacy lives on through Victorian Schools Team Sailing, GirlSail and the officials she continues to mentor as Secretary of the Victorian Race Officials Committee, a career defined as much by the standards she's set as the events she's delivered.
