Millaa Millaa Golf Club

Millaa Millaa Golf Club Home to Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo Millaa Millaa is a well known tourist route featuring the waterfall circuit.

Location:-
The Millaa Millaa Golf course is situated on the southern end of the Cairns Highlands (Atherton Tablelands) approximately 110 km drive (1.75 hours) south west of Cairns and 60 kms west of Innisfail. It;s altitude of some 870 meters above sea level makes it Queensland’s highest altitude golf course nestled between the rain forest and dairy pastures. Topography:-
The course is naturally undulating (a feature many course’s would envy) with 9 holes and different tee off positions for the second 9. It features natural water hazards, bunkers and well placed trees to test your accuracy. Small grass greens add to the challenge on this short but very picturesque course. Wildlife:-
The course attracts a myriad of native creatures and birds. These include the rare Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo and the friendly dairy cows. It is a very relaxing course on which to enjoy a round of golf. Major Events through the Year
January - OPENING DAY
June - CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
September - Annual OPEN WEEKEND

MILLAA MILLAA GOLF CLUB
12-13 SEPTEMBER
This was our Annual Millaa Millaa Open weekend, and there are a number of thankyous to start with. Firstly, to our sponsors – Catalyst Accounting and Tax, who were sponsoring the Open for the first time. Great to have Amanda and her team on board. Amanda also helped out in the kitchen preparing our lunches for the weekend, which is one of the really important jobs for hungry golfers, while her husband Glen drove the drinks cart around to guard against dehydration and/or sobriety. Thanks also to our captains Les and Shane who got us all organised and away on time, and Trevor, getting carts sorted for the non-walkers. To the maintenance team in making sure the course and greens were in great shape in a year when the weather has conspired against them constantly. And finally, to Lyn in charge of catering, Michelle for her peerless baking, Millaa CWA ladies for the cakes and slices for morning teas, those members who brought along salads, and Ross behind the bar. A great team effort all round. And what a wonderful community we’re a part of.

The weekend kicked off with a 4-Ball Ambrose on Saturday. Friday’s weather had been dreadful, so it was a credit to the 15 teams who turned up to play regardless. Don McHardie led his team to first place with an excellent score of 55 1/8 (61 gross, which, in challenging conditions of cold wind and intermittent drizzle, was a terrific effort). Second spot went to Mark Peters’ team with 57¼. After that, less than two shots separated third from 12th – Shane Bradley’s crew doing just enough on a congested scoreboard to sneak into third place with 58 7/8. Les and Shane had done a great job in mixing locals and visitors for the starting groups, so the day was a fun social occasion as well. NTPs went to Dad’s Army, led by Leo Leonard (1/10 and second shot 3/12) and Vet Legends, Brian Hughes’ team (5/14).

So, after going home and drying the gear out, 47 starters fronted up again on Sunday for the Open Stroke event in slightly more favourably conditions. Again, everyone was organised and ready to go at their appointed time, so apart from two carts breaking down, the day went very well.
Congratulations to the following winners:
Trophy Men Women
18 Hole Gross Des Riggs (75) Jacqui Lambert (82)
18 Hole Nett Wayne Crowley (66)
A Grade Nett Danny Morrison (70)
B Grade Nett Brian Cole (68)
C Grade Nett Mark Hayward (67)
Senior Nett Tim Lambert (70)
NTP 1/10 Kenleigh Mather Jacqui Lambert
NTP 6/15 Glen Vick
Longest Drive A Grade Kobe Owens
Longest Drive B Grade Mark Peters
Longest Drive C Grade Mark Hayward
Bradman’s Prize Rick Gooderham

The very welcome prizes in the big weekend raffle went to the Owens crew from Townsville, Geoff Errey and Shane Bradley.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who turned up for the weekend – the event wouldn’t have been the success it was without you. We are particularly grateful for the ongoing support from members of our fellow FNQ clubs, including Atherton, Mareeba and Half Moon Bay, as well as the team who came up from Rowes Bay in Townsville.

Next weekend we’ll be holding the Gadgarra Sawmill Bisque Bogey event postponed from August, seeing it’s too windy for Happy to go fishing at present. Read up on the rules and strategies, and we’ll see you on the greens on Sunday.

MILLAA MILLAA GOLF CLUB
6 SEPTEMBER
Monthly Medal time again, and a much-improved day weather-wise brought 24 golfers out to Millaa Millaa for the regular Stroke event sponsored by our long-term partners, Mungalli Dairy and the Millaa Millaa Hotel. A sunny day, no clouds, just a light breeze – where else would you want to be? Certainly not on Planet Bleak, like last Sunday.

Despite the great conditions, scoring wasn’t what we might have expected – only Trevor Warrener and Mark Hayward were under nett par with 68 each. Trevor’s score on the back nine won him first place on a countback from Mark. Third, on nett 70, was Glen Vick. One highlight from the day was Mal Armstrong’s chip-in par on #6 – ricochetting off another ball and into the hole. Obviously, a month off in Bundaberg hasn’t lessened his luck!

NTPs were won by Mark Twomey (nearest on 1/10 as well as second shot on 8/17) and Wayne Crowley (6/15). Ash Healy, Wayne Crowley and Fred Anderson (again) were raffle winners, while the Members’ Draw jackpots for yet another week.

During the week, the slab for our new cart shed was poured – huge thanks to Wongabel Quarry who generously donated the concrete for the pour. On Saturday, Millaa Millaa School P & C held a Father’s Day event as a fund raiser at the club; golf, face painting and lots of other activities for the families who came along. A great day apparently, and hopefully the beginning of a closer relationship between the school and club. Have a look elsewhere on our page for their photos of the day. Next up, we have the Millaa Millaa Open weekend – a four-ball Ambrose on Saturday and the Open on Sunday. Let Les know if you can bring a salad along for the lunch on Sunday; our wonderful sponsors, Catalyst Accounting and Tax, have got lunches sorted for Saturday. And on Friday 25 September the Cairns Naval Base Golf Club members will be up for the Annual Navy Shield event. Millaa won last year, so everyone get along to help defend it.

On a sadder note, Don McHardie brought news that former member Tony Lattimore has recently passed away. Tony was a regular visitor to our club over many years, driving up from Wingham in NSW to spend four months every winter at the caravan park, and joining us each Sunday on the course. Tony’s last visit here was four years ago, but he was playing regularly at Wingham until a couple of months back. Tony was always good fun, particularly as his visits coincided with State of Origin, and NSW rarely won back then.

Looking forward (not with much optimism) to great weather next weekend for the Open – see you then.

What a fantastic turn out for the Millaa Millaa State School Fathers Day fund raiser.
The day wasn't about winners and losers it was about getting a happy group of people, both young and old onto the golf course for some fun.
This looks to be becoming an annual event and the Millaa Millaa Golf Club couldn't be happier. See you all again next year.

Thanks to Wongabel Concrete the buggy shed is another step closer to completion.
Wongabel Concrete generously donated the Concrete for the slab which makes them a great supporter of the Millaa Millaa Golf Club and the local community.
We are more than excited to see the progress and look forward to the next step.
