For me, saddle fit has never just been about the saddle. It’s about the horse underneath it. 🐴

When we ask our horses to carry us, train with us and perform with us, I believe we have a responsibility to make their comfort part of every decision we make.

That was particularly important to me when starting my young horse’s ridden journey. I wanted to give him the best possible foundation from the beginning - and that journey ultimately led me to Black Country Saddles.

What started with finding the right solution for my own horse has now become something I’m incredibly proud to offer other riders here in Western Australia.

The response to my last post about hindgut dysbiosis showed me just how many horse owners are asking questions about gut health. 🐴

And that's exactly why I wanted to continue the conversation.

Gut issues aren't always straightforward, and sometimes the signs we notice first aren't necessarily digestive ones. We notice changes in our horse - in their comfort, behaviour, sensitivity or willingness to work - and start trying to understand why.

I'm certainly not suggesting that every behavioural change is caused by the gut, or that we should try to diagnose our horses ourselves. If you're concerned about your horse, your equine vet should always be your first port of call.

But I do believe there's value in observing our horses closely, asking questions and continuing to learn.

I've spent more than 45 years around horses and I'm still learning from them.

I've also found a few things over the years that have worked well for my own horses when supporting their hindgut health.

Cape W**d is pretty, but is it doing our horses any favours? 🌼🐴

I’ve talked before about the changes in behaviour I’ve noticed in my horses when Cape W**d is abundant, but there’s more to the story.

The sugars and starches in pasture can have a big impact on the delicate microbial balance in the hindgut and this can contribute to hindgut dysbiosis.

In today’s Reel, I’m chatting about what hindgut dysbiosis is, what can contribute to it, and why those changes in the pasture can matter more than we might realise.

Because sometimes, what looks pretty in the paddock can be a little more complicated on the inside. 🌿

A saddle isn't just about your comfort. It's about your horse's too. 🐴

We ask a lot of our horses and the saddle is one of the most important connections between horse and rider.

If you own horses, you'll understand this one. 🤦‍♀️

We do everything we can to make their environment safe - check paddocks, fences, gates, troughs and anything else they might possibly find a way to hurt themselves on.

And then Galaxy goes and manages to give himself a rather impressive gash on the water trough. 🙈

Thankfully he is keeping his bandage on, but it's another reminder that with horses, sometimes you can do everything right and they'll still find something you never thought could possibly be a problem.

We never get on our horses expecting something to go wrong.

Most rides are completely uneventful and that's exactly the point. Rider safety isn't about riding in fear. It's about being prepared for the unexpected so you can get on and enjoy doing what you love. 🐴

When did you last have your horse’s saddle fit checked? 🐴

It’s easy to think that once a saddle fits, it fits - but our horses are constantly changing.

Training, fitness, muscle development, weight, age and workload can all influence their shape over time.

Regular saddle-fit checks are simply another part of putting your horse’s comfort and freedom of movement first.

A little update on my horses… and so far, I'm really encouraged by what I'm seeing. 🐴🌱

A few weeks ago I shared why I'd started looking more closely at magnesium and calcium balance in my horses' diet.

Since introducing supplementation, I've noticed some really positive changes - particularly in how calm and settled they seem and how they're responding to everyday stimuli.

Is magnesium the answer to everything? Absolutely not.

For me, this is still about looking at the whole horse - pasture, nutrition, gut health, environment and the individual horse in front of me.

There's still work to do, particularly with my young horse and his hindgut health, but I'll keep sharing what I'm learning and what I notice along the way.

Sometimes horse care really is about putting the pieces of the puzzle together. 🧩

Can I reuse my Hit Air vest after it activates? 🦺🐴

Yes - Hit Air vests are designed to be reusable.

After an activation, your vest needs to be correctly reset, the CO₂ cartridge replaced with the correct one for your vest model, and the vest checked for any signs of damage before you ride again.

Can a saddle pad fix a saddle that doesn’t fit? 🐴

Not necessarily.

Pads can have a useful role and, in some situations, may be recommended as part of achieving the right fit. But simply adding more padding isn’t a solution for a saddle that doesn’t fit your horse correctly.

And remember - your horse changes. Muscle development, fitness, weight, age and workload can all affect how a saddle fits over time.

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t just add another pad.

Ask why.

A comfortable horse starts with a saddle that fits. 🤍
