Does your club run a 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗹𝘀 comp?

We've now seen a number of clubs start their own Barefoot Bowls Leagues to recruit new players and give local workplaces an evening comp to enter and have fun.

A Barefoot Bowls league or regular competition is a great way to introduce new people to the sport, get locals to your club, and potentially gain a few more Pennant players for the season.

Moorabbin Bowling Club has run their highly successful Moorabbin Barefoot Bowls League (MBBL) for the past 3 years, with the most recent league having a whopping 24 teams!

St Kilda Bowls Club is about to start their Barefoot Cup on October 14th and we're sure there's more out there - and we'd love to hear about them!

Is this something that could work in your club? Yes, it takes hard work and volunteers, but the rewards can be worth it. Starting small can lead to big things!

🥇🥇 OUR FIRST FINAL OF THE YEAR🥇🥇

Tomorrow night, Sandbelt kicks off its first final of the 2026/27 season with the Over-60s Women's Pairs! 🏆

It’s shaping up to be a hotly contested battle between Caulfield Park Sports Club’s Shelley Beder & Ann McCarthy and Moorabbin Bowling Club’s Hayley Peter & Tess Vawser.

The action starts from 6pm at Chadstone Bowls Club, with roll up from 5.45pm. Be sure to get down and watch some great bowls, but if you can't be sure to follow along wherever you are on the BowlsLink App or Website for live scoring.

We also have the Men's Over 60's Semi Finals on at the same time.

Today we hosted our fourth annual Integrated Pairs Tournament, and the green was buzzing with incredible talent, fantastic sportsmanship, and great community spirit. It was an inspiring day of 3-bowl pairs action, bringing together bowlers of all abilities for some truly competitive matches.

A massive congratulations to all of today's outstanding winners:
• Winners: Mick Manning & Ben Peachey (Korumburra)
• Runners Up: Brad Cooke & Glen Gloury (Heathmont)
• Best 1st Game: Rob Huddle & Rob Ruffle (Heathmont) – 13 shots up
• Best 2nd Game: Tim Connolly & Billy Murnane (Brunswick) – 14 shots up with 7 ends
• Best 3rd Game: Gary Cantwell & Kathleen Spicer (Boronia) – 17 shots up
• Best 4th Game: Phil Mahoney & Claire Smyth (Hampton Bayside) – 7 shots up

An extra special shoutout goes to tournament winner Mick Manning! Not only did he take home the top trophy, but he also arrived super early this morning to set up all the rinks for the day. Talk about a true champion on and off the green!

Days like today simply do not happen without a powerhouse team working behind the scenes. A massive thank you to Cheryl Cooksey, Judy Collins, Rod & Sheenagh Mahoney, John Smith, Hayden Watkins, and Robyn Donoghue for keeping everything running perfectly.
We also send a huge shoutout to our umpire of the day, Grace Cory, for keeping the games fair and square!

We are so proud to have run this wonderful tournament for the fourth time, and we are already looking forward to making next year’s event

What a fantastic day for the opening of our greens!

Last year’s singles winners, Yvonne Arnold and Terry Callaghan, officially got things underway by bowling the old wood.

We then rolled into a friendly game that—in true club spirit—ended up being very competitive!

A big, warm welcome to our new members who joined the action and looked absolutely fantastic in the club blue: Lindy Syrett, Cris Ellis, Marika Osmotherly, John Hennessy, Greg Kelly, Tracey Fletcher, and Hayden Watkins! Welcome to the Moorabbin Bowls Club family!

The weather gods looked after us perfectly once again. As Norm Foenander used to say, "Welcome to Sunny Moorabbin!" The sun burst through right on cue for our match. We managed to dodge the elements completely, with plenty of rain falling overnight and the downpour holding off until just after the games finished.

A huge thank you to Anita Sleight and Lindy Syrett for putting together a lovely lunch for everyone.

Happy Birthday for yesterday Coach

Happy 70th birthday Marty Lyons.
Born 4th of September 1956.
After transferring to senior football from the Beaumaris Under 17s, Lyons was hailed as the VFArecruit of the year after his first season at Sandringham, but they were unable to hold him after impressive performances attracted the interest of VFL clubs. He had interest from St Kilda, but signed with Melbourne.
Lyons debuted in Round 1, 1975 and kicked four goals on debut. He played 19 games and was voted Best First Year Player, but despite playing the first two games of the next year Lyons struggled to hold his spot over the next two years and was cleared back to Sandringham midway through 1977. He returned in time to play in their VFA Grand Final side, appearing in 141 games for the Zebras until 1986. He played in a Reserves premiership in 1982, and a senior flag in 1985.
In 1986 Lyons was appointed captain of the senior side and coached the reserves in the same year before retiring midway through the season after his mother and brother passed away in quick succession. He return to Sandringham as Reserves coach in 1988.
Son Jarryd played 194 AFL games and won the 2023 JJ Liston trophy.

WHAT A WAY TO FINISH!
Yesterday wrapped up our very last day of Winter Social Bowls for the season, and the weather gods certainly smiled on us with the sun shining bright!

We had an incredible turnout of 51 players forming 18 teams, which meant we got to stretch out across both greens to fit everyone in.

We also want to give a huge shoutout to everyone who jumped behind the bar, helped set up, and packed up the rinks at the end of the day. Every bit of help is greatly appreciated!

We love organising these days and we are proud to provide such a great day for our the club and community.
