👏 Nick Maddern is an Ironman Australia Legend. 👏
He has just completed his 13th Ironman and 10th at Port Macquarie. Wow 🤩
What do love about Ironman that’s encouraged you to do so many?
It started as a challenge to do a half, and then I thought I would do a full (Melbourne 2013). It was pretty average - so went to do another - and then another, and so on.
At some point I started thinking of Kona but was never near the qualifying times but I discovered, way back, that there is a legacy program. After 12 finishes you can get invited to go. After my 11th finish I actually qualified for IM WC in Nice, France, which made that my 12th finish. That put me on the legacy list, and my Legacy Kona year came up for 2027 - the ultimate goal is in sight.
Your PM race looked like it went very well given the AG 19th place and 11.10 finish time. How did you find it ?
The swim was one of my best IM swims I have done - only bettered by my first PM IM swim 12 years ago. I felt I was fast in the water without expending too much effort - and very happy with the effort in the end!
The bike leg is an again a consistent effort - not putting too much effort. The weather at the start was a bit cool and wet which helps. The course is not that flat so lots of up and down hills. The second half warmed up and the wind picked up which made it a bit harder - but kept a close eye on my speed and power kept it under control.
The run was when the sun came out and it started to get a bit harder. i found my stride fairly early on and kept the legs ticking over at a regular pace. When the mind games started I would look at my heart rate and see that I’m not dying and convince myself I can keep going the way that I was.
Best bit of all was finishing in daylight for the first time (daylight savings helped)!
What kind of training load across swim bike & run have you been doing this last 12 weeks in preparation?
Mostly the bike - and on the indoor trainer. An hour most mornings before work. A couple of 60km and 90km cycles during the weekend in the months before the race - and a little 10km run after.
Running has been mostly 10km runs during work lunch - with some long 21-26km runs thrown in there
Swimming has been in the north Sydney Olympic pool since it last opened - 1000m swims mostly on the weekend.
Any advice for those of us thinking about doing a first Ironman?
Consistency - not necessarily big volume. Get any training that you can in - be it running or cycling to/from work or during lunch time. A 20min swim after work now and then.
It doesn’t have to be every day at every available moment- every little bit helps and those parts add up to a big amount in the end
What helped the most for me this time is keeping a close eye on my metrics in training peaks - that gives you an excellent guide as to where you are and where you are going fitness-wise.
