Round three of the Brew Bar Coffee Lounge series was conducted over 25KMs on an out and back course at Attamurra Road on Sunday.
Sunny conditions with a SSE breeze, which would assist on the outward journey greeted a limit group of six, consisting of Spek Peake, Mike Bakker,
Chris Neave, Sandra Parsons, Molly Opperman and John Cranwell. This group had a gap of one minute over Ethan McKenny, Xavier Farmilo and Matthew Opperman who in turn were given a lead of two minutes over Tim Koopman and Stephen Jones. Three minutes later, Tina Opperman, the commissaire let the scratch group of Jamison Buckley, Nick Kidman and Scott Waters go to chase those ahead.
With a cross/tail wind to assist the riders, the pace was quite high which proved the undoing of first Molly, then Sandra and then Spek, leaving the other three to continue to the turn mark.
Chris, Mike and John turned to head home and see what damage had been done with the high pace. Spek, Sandra, Ethan and Xavier turned close together, but not as a group, while Matthew was assisting Molly to continue with her chase. Tim and Stephen were holding the scratch group at bay, but scratch had taken a lot of the three minutes back.
Homeward bound and the riders found the speed had dropped quite a bit as the Southerly breeze was not helping at all and Chris and John found themselves without Mike who had lost contact after the turn.
The strength of the scratch group showed out as they reeled in the riders with only Tim and Stephen able to hold the wheels of this group and they caught and passed Chris and John to hit the front of the race with six kilometres to go. Riders had attempted to join the scratch group, but were unable to due to the fickle nature of the wind and were left to battle to the finish line in small groups or singularly.
At the finish line, Jamison used his track skills to out sprint Scott and Nick with Stephen and Tim filling the top five places, followed by John and Chris who had kept the others at bay. Spek , Mike, Xavier and Sandra were next, followed by Ethan, Molly and Matthew, who had assisted his daughter home.
Thanks have to go to our commissaire Tina, turn marshal Liam Fielding, follow car of Dave Delaland and supporters for helping at the race.
Many of the riders and officials adjourned to the Brew Bar, our sponsors, for refreshments after the race.
Race four in the series is set down for the circuit at Kongorong on Sunday 25th February.

Hi folks

As Jason was unavailable, I have taken it upon myself to do a report, which hopefully will be made public. Should anyone find errors, please advise before it goes to press.

Our wonderful major sponsors - thanks to you all for your support to continue to host this wonderful event.

19/05/2023

Our race is full of history. We thank Allan Dowdell for his contributions to our race. Allan will be holding the chequered flag at the finish line for our 2023 winners.

The Mount Gambier Cycling Club was first formed in March 1885 and called The Mount Gambier Bicycling Club, holding its first championship on high penny farthing style bicycles on 11 November 1885.

This championship was won by Jesse Boothey by a narrow margin from John Dowdell and Allan Dowdell. The gold and silver medals from this event are with Allan Dowdell OAM, a relative of John and Allan.

The present Mount Gambier Cycling Club has been running continuously and is amongst the oldest clubs still running in Australia, an achievement that the club is very proud of.

In 2025 it will be the 140th anniversary of the formation of the MGCC. This is a remarkable effort for the club with committees and volunteers working hard to achieve these results over the years.

The first 100 Mile Classic event was started in 1933 when Alex Roberts and the club applied to the League of South Australian Wheelmen to run a 100 mile race in Mount Gambier after Ray Mason and Les Lynch had won the South Australian road racing championships in 1928, 1929 and 1930.

So successful was the 100 Mile that after permission was granted it has continued every year with the exception of the war years and is now South Australia's most important single stage road race. Many top Australian riders have won and gained fastest time sashes over the impressive history of the event.

Pre-war the brilliant Adelaide rider Deane Toseland won the second event in 1934 followed by fastest time in 1935, 1936, 1938 and 1939.

The appearance of Russell Mockridge in 1957 drew a huge crowd of spectators, the most the event had ever seen. This remarkable rider managed to gain the fastest time prize after riding the full distance on his own with no assistance.

Amongst other top riders who have starred by winning and or gaining fastest time are Duncan Hunter of Melbourne, the then world sprint champion, Sid Patterson, also of Melbourne, Barry Waddell from Perth, Terry Hammond & Peter Besanko, both from Melbourne and more recently Brett Aiken of Adelaide and Joseph Cooper, the New Zealand national champion.

In 1986 the Mount Gambier Cycling Club was granted the Australian 125 Mile championship to be run on the Thursday before the 100 Mile Classic, with a huge number of riders from all Australian states competing. The winner of the 100 Mile Classic that year was Neil Stephens from Canberra, who rode a tremendous race to win and gain fastest time in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Neil then went on to Europe to further his cycling career.

Mount Gambier riders have won the 100 Mile Classic on 14 occasions, with Matthew Opperman our last winner in 2016.

Arthur Berkefield (1941) and Brian Tilley (1977) from Mount Gambier are the only club riders who have won fastest time.

The Mount Gambier Cycling Club can be proud of its promotion of this great Australian road classic and thank the public, riders and the loyal and generous sponsors, volunteers, South Australian Police, local councils and Cycling South Australia who support this great sporting classic.

Allan Dowdell
