More people in Mount Gambier are turning to bicycles as rising petrol prices put pressure on household budgets, with the owner of one local bike shop saying he's seen an increase in interest.

Shane deJong runs Crater Lake Cycles in Mount Gambier, and he says that in the weeks since petrol prices began to rise, he's also seen an increase in interest for e-bikes and parts for bikes that haven't been used in years.

"There's been a lot more people dusting off their bikes and riding to work, even if it's a day or two a week, it's been making a pretty big difference for people." he said.

One example Shane used was that usually they'd sell two to three 26-inch tubes a week (which are common for older bikes), but in twelve-day period they sold 17.

"It just shows that people are just buying a couple tubes, a couple of tyres and doing the bare minimum to get their bike running, to get back on the bike."

Locally, prices for unleaded petrol have risen close to $2.60 a litre, but this week the Federal Government announced they'll be temporarily cutting the tax we pay for fuel, meaning we should start to see petrol prices drop in the coming days.

But despite the expected price drop, the shift toward cycling could be about more than just saving money in the short term. For some, it has become a practical and reliable alternative for getting to work, running errands, and staying active, particularly as cost-of-living pressures continue to bite.

Shane says that factors like weather along with those financial pressures could be enough to steer more people into riding long-term.

"That's obviously encouraging for people that might be on the fence about riding to work. All of a sudden you've got nice weather, you've got the price of fuel and going well - why not?"

In 2022, based on self-reported data from the National Health Survey, it was estimated that 78% of adults aged 18-64 were insufficiently physically active, something that's generally more prevalent in regional areas. Shane says exercise is also a positive factor in getting back on the bike.

"Everyone's doing extra hours, everyone's trying to stay afloat. So no one's got time to exercise. So I think just that idea of riding to work once or twice a week, just makes a pretty big difference for how people stay active." he said.

With uncertainty around how long fuel prices will remain high and what impacts the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will have on day-to-day expenses 12,000km away in Mount Gambier, we could be seeing more people dust off old bikes and look for ways to reduce their reliance on the petrol pump.
