The Victorian State Cup was held on the weekend of December 2nd and 3rd in the states north at Rochester, 30km south of Echuca. The prestigious event attracted over 200 entries and was contested by two local Mt Gambier members both eyeing off the prize of being the state cup holder and the coveted Black no.1 plate.

Jack Ryan entered in the TAG Restricted Heavy class for the first time and made his presence felt immediately as he took pole position in qualifying and backed that up with a dominant start to finish win in heat 1. Leading early in heat 2, Ryan was relegated back to fourth by mid race and unable to make up those positions, settled to be the second highest point scorer after day 1.
With time to fine tune the kart over night, Ryan's crew lead by father Mark, made the adjustment's needed to give Jack the kart he needed and was never headed in heat 3.
Starting from pole, and with great advice from the crew, Ryan made the perfect start and set about building a margin over the chasing pack. Try as they might, Ryan drove superbly and was never seriously challenged throughout the final and took the win and right to display the coveted Black plate for the next 12 months.

Taking on the strong field in TAG Restricted Light, Joel Robinson had a tough weekend. Qualifying in 14th put Robinson on the back foot early but there was only .5 of a second between himself and the pole sitter showing just how close the competition was.
Robinson ended the 3 heats with a 12th, 14th and 13th giving him a 14th starting position for the final which was going to be a hard task with the talent in the class.
At the chequered flag Joel Robinson was able to move up to 7th across the line which was a great effort and a reward after a hard weekend.

Congratulations to both MGKC drivers and their respective teams.

With the opportunity for multiple practice sessions in the morning before racing commenced at 3pm, a lot of competitors took to the track to fine tune their karts for not only this event but for the upcoming Festival State Cup round on Nov 11 & 12.

Cadet 9/12
Kurtis Polkinghorne was the lone driver in cadet 12 and showed good speed throughout the day and greeted the chequered flag first in all but heat 2 where Lawson Effingham took the overall. Effingham was the winner in Cadet 9 ahead of Logan Rethus who took the win in heat 1 with Levi Devlin improving with every lap ,third. Oscar Booth made the trip from Adelaide to contest the day and Evie Heemskerk had her first race day, well done Oscar and Evie.

KA3 Junior Light/Heavy
A strong field of 8 for the combined class saw some great racing for the podium positions with Xavier Cain able to come away with the overall win in lights, ahead of Levi Jones and Riley Gee. Riley Briggs took the top spot in heavy ahead of Austin Smith.

TAG Restricted Light/Heavy
Showing the way in all but one heat, Niki Collins did well to finish the day on top with Jayden Christensen crediting himself with a heat win to be second ahead of the improving Austin Holman who was able to set the quickest time in the final. Graeme Lewis continues to show persistence and was the winner in heavy.

KA3 Senior Light TAG 125 Light and TAG 125 Heavy
Although Bronson Boult was the only TAG light, he showed some incredible kart skill with some very consistent lap times throughout all 4 races. KA3 was a clean sweep to Troy Moreland ahead of Brock Fewins and Lily Cain. TAG Heavy went the way of Andrew Harvey even after a DNF in heat 2, ahead of the experienced Kelvin Moreland.

4SS Senior Light/Medium and Supermaxx
Competing in his second class of the day Jayden Christensen mixed it with the medium class runners and was the winner of Light. The medium class went the way of Angelo Belmonte ahead of Josh Munn who returned to have a run in the club kart after many years away from the sport. Simon Dart rounded out the podium having some great tussles throughout the day. Peter Leonard was in the thick of it all day and won the Supermaxx from Bronty Willis-Matthews.

TAG Restricted Medium
A field of 6 produced some of the closest racing of the day with Mark Heemskerk able to take all 4 wins. Grady Hutchesson was runner up on all occasions with Rhys Devlin in third. Visiting driver Kyle Booth raced to a third in heat 1 before retiring from the day with injury.

The Mount Gambier Karting Club will now look forward to next weekend's Festival State Cup to be hosted at the Glenburnie Raceway and then look forward to season 2024.
