Members of the Mount Gambier Karting Club travelled to Hamilton last weekend to compete in Round 2 of the Victorian Country Series, taking on strong fields across multiple categories. The event provided a valuable mix of experience, with seasoned drivers and newcomers stepping up to larger-scale competition.

In KA3 Junior Light, Orlando Brown faced a competitive 28-kart field in his first major outing. He qualified 21st, just 0.8 seconds off pole, highlighting the tight competition. Unfortunately, a crash in Heat 1 resulted in a DNF, forcing him to start from the rear in Heat 2 where he finished 21st. Brown showed resilience in Heat 3, climbing from 23rd to 19th. However, the final ended prematurely after being caught up in another incident.

Tag Restricted Medium featured three Mount Gambier drivers in a 24-kart field. Grady Hutchesson led the charge in qualifying with 6th, only 0.21 seconds off pole. After a spin in Heat 1 dropped him back, he recovered strongly throughout the heats, including an impressive drive to 6th in Heat 2 and 5th in Heat 3. Starting 8th in the final, Hutchesson’s run ended early due to contact from another driver.

Matt Hensel qualified 8th in an incredibly tight field. A difficult Heat 1 saw him drop to 17th, followed by a challenging Heat 2 where he finished 18th after avoiding contact. He bounced back in Heat 3 with a strong drive to 9th. In the final, Hensel worked into the top 10 before being spun, ultimately recovering to finish 18th.

Jason Fewins made a welcome return to major competition, qualifying 18th. Across the heats, he improved steadily with finishes of 23rd, 16th, and 15th. In the final, while running inside the top 15, he was caught in an incident and finished 20th.

In KA3 Senior Medium, Sam Taylor competed in a field of seven and showed consistent improvement across the weekend. With each heat, he reduced his lap times significantly, culminating in a strong final performance in his first major event.

KA3 Senior Light delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend. Levi Jones qualified 9th in a tight 27-kart field. He maintained position in Heat 1, surged to 4th in Heat 2, and delivered an outstanding drive to 2nd in Heat 3. Starting near the front in the final, Jones continued his strong form to secure 3rd place and a podium finish.

Also in KA3 Senior Light, Cooper Foale qualified 19th in his first major meeting on bitumen. Despite challenging heats and race incidents, he gained valuable experience, though his final ended early after a first-turn crash.

In Tag Restricted Light, Shane Moreland was a standout performer. Qualifying 2nd, just 0.058 seconds off pole, he dominated the heats with three consecutive wins. In the final, Moreland led for much of the race before finishing a close 2nd, just 0.2 seconds behind the winner.

Tag Light saw Jacob Fitzsimmons take on a 23-kart field. After qualifying 13th, he battled through the heats and showed determination in the final, climbing from 19th to finish 13th.

In the Victorian Combined Masters class, Mark Heemskerk delivered a strong weekend performance. Qualifying 2nd, just 0.1 off pole, he secured consistent 2nd-place finishes in Heats 1 and 2. In Heat 3, he was classified the winner. Starting from pole in the final, Heemskerk led early before finishing in a solid 2nd place.

Overall, it was a weekend of strong performances, valuable experience, and determination from all Mount Gambier Karting Club drivers and their pit crews. The team now looks ahead to Round 3 of the Victorian Country Series in Portland at the end of June.
