Baker & Ey Shield 2025

On Saturday afternoon, two Mount Gambier teams travelled to Lucindale to compete in the Annual Baker & Ey Shield against the Southern Ports Association. Whilst conditions were unusually cool and very windy, everyone seemed to enjoy the day out, with plenty of spectators on hand to watch some quality tennis at the picturesque grass court complex.

With Mount Gambier coming away with the win in both shields last year, Southern Ports were determined to take the shields back, with some handy inclusions to their squad this year. The combination of those inclusions, and the unavailability of a couple of Mount Gambier’s top men and women, was enough to see some one-sided contests in both shields.

In the Baker Shield (Division 1), Southern Ports won the contest 22 sets to 10. There were a lot of great individual performances within the Southern Ports team, but some of the more regular shield players in Matt Menz, Melissa McGrath and Poppy Moyle-Read stood out, along with some amazing tennis from newcomer Astrid White. Southern Ports never looked like being in danger of losing this one. Standouts for Mount Gambier were Dylan Childs and Andrew van den Hurk, who remained undefeated for the day, along with a great contribution from Sarah Edwards winning two of her three sets played.

In the Ey Shield (Division 2), Southern Ports also took the chocolates in convincing fashion, winning 25 sets to 7. It was hard to pick any standouts in this one, as it really was a true team performance. Even in the 7 sets the team dropped, they put up a great fight and made the Mount Gambier players really earn their wins.

Overall, it was a great day of tennis, and hopefully all players enjoyed the new format with the inclusion of mixed doubles into the competition. Mount Gambier will need to go back to the drawing board in readiness for 2026. With the shields changing hands quite a few times over the last seven or eight years, anything is possible next time around.
