On Saturday the 17th of June the South East Academy of Chinese Martial Arts recently hosted a celebratory event to recognize the 40th anniversary of one of the primary styles taught at the academy – Jik Cheung Kung Fu. Held in Mt Gambier, the event included both an afternoon training seminar with various instructors and an evening reception at the Commodore on the Park.
Jik Cheung Kung Fu was created by the (late) founder Si Jo Ray Potterat in Hahndorf, South Australia in August of 1983.
The training session was well attended by students of the style, both past and present. Guest instructors Jamie Josephs and Richard Schultz took us through a variety of techniques. Si Hing Jamie took everyone through a variety of different wrist grab counters. With Si Fu Amedeo Cella (Joe) keeping things more simple and showing alternative finishes to several techniques, as well as a countering/blocking drill. Si Dai Rod Sparks ran the students though a section of inward training, and getting everyone to think about what is going on inside of oneself more than just the outside. This was based around the use of one’s core power/strength. Sensei Richard (one of the students who was taught back in the early 1980’s, then studied Karate after returning from the Navy) took us though a HIGH energy session of speed and fun. Taking us though some old training methods that we still use today, as well as a few games that develop and raise awareness levels.
That evening, a dinner reception was held at the The Commodore to showcase the history of the style, and recognize the importance of the 40 year milestone. Past students who were part of the origin of the style travelled from as far as Tasmania to attend the event, and pay homage to the style’s late founder, Si Jo Ray Potterat. Gino Iuliano, Mark Brooke and Richard Schultz all recounted their personal stories of discovering and training within the style, accompanied by a backdrop of historic photographs showing the development of Jik Cheung Kung Fu over the last 40 years. Current Si Fu Joe provided his insights into his time training with Si Jo Ray Potterat. This included the story of how Si Fu Bruce Jordan and Si Fu Joe located Si Jo Ray after the two were abandoned by their previous instructor. To only then complete their black belt training and for Si Fu Bruce to open a school here in Mount Gambier. Si Hing Jamie Josephs of the Ballarat School of Jik Cheung Kung Fu also shared his recollections on how he discovered the style.
The event concluded with video footage of the earliest recorded Kick Boxing fights that Jik Cheung Kung Fu used to enter back in the 1980’s. All students present thoroughly enjoyed the walk down memory lane, and look forward to celebrating the next big milestone for the style in future.
