Vale Antonio Oliva Seba
1948 - 2024

I was deeply saddened to hear that Sensei Antonio Olivia Seba passed away on Monday, May 13.

Oliva Sensei was, without question, the best sport karate coach I have trained with, and was famous for his tactical drills to improve the possibility of winning in sport kumite. He came to Australia many times since 1985 and has influenced generations of fighters.

For me, his greatest asset was his wisdom. He was a very humble, kind and loving man as well.

His method of coaching will live on in every coach who seriously immersed themselves in his system of training.

He was truly unique and will be sorely missed.

What a great weekend with Seishikan Ballarat Goju Ryu Karate Club! It was fantastic to see the effort and focus displayed by students throughout the training session.

Thank you to everyone who made the drive from Ballarat to Mount Gambier (and back), especially on such a hot day. Thank you to Sensei Mark Azzopardi for organising the weekend, and Sensei Wade Von Stanke for taking the first half of the session.

Did you know this year will mark the 50th anniversary of Seishikan Karate in Mount Gambier?

Seishikan Karate was first established in the South East in Millicent in 1973. In 1974, Sensei John Ingham and Dean Slaughter from the Millicent dojo opened the Mount Gambier school at the YMCA (now Swimskool).

In the latter half of 1974, Shihan Tsujimoto, Shihan Phil Bates and Sensi John Plant came to Mount Gambier, and along with the instructors from Millicent, demonstrated to the public all of the techniques of Seishikan Karate.

Sensei John Ingham instructed in the Mount Gambier and Millicent dojo for around seven years, eventually leaving to join the Victorian Police. John continued with his study of karate under the famous Kisaki Sensei from Yuishinkan Karate. John is now an 8th dan and is still in contact with Shihan Phil today. John was responsible for building a strong karate ethic in the Mount Gambier and Millicent dojos.

The Mount Gambier dojo now has three main instructors with Shihan Phil - 8th dan, Shihan Alba Kraatz - 7th dan, and Sensei Wade Von Stanke - 5th dan. They are assisted by Sempai Linda Dodds - 3rd dan and Sempai Sonia Dickerson - 3rd dan.

Last month, we held our annual Summer Camp on from Friday, November 24th to Sunday, November 26th. Students from Mount Gambier were joined by both instructors and students from Adelaide and Ballarat.

The object of the camp was to practice two of the more senior kata of the Goju system of karate, and to study them in greater detail than usual occurs during our weekly lessons.

Over the duration of the camp, several students were also assessed for their 1st degree, 2nd degree, 3rd degree and 4th degree black belts, and were all successful.

Thank you to everyone who participated and help make the weekend such a success. It was a content heavy week, and we were greatly impressed to see the outstanding effort put in by instructors and students alike.
