Some doors don’t open just because you ask.

When Pat Davidson wanted to train with this guy, the answer was blunt: he didn’t let pieces of sh*t into his life. But he offered a deal. 500 straight Hindu squats and 200 straight Hindu push-ups, and he could start on day one.

Davidson spent a month practising, then did it in the guy’s living room.

Day one was three hours of the guy’s crew taking turns on him, and that was only the first half. He said okay and kept going.

Pat Davidson woke up thinking it was 9am and he was late for work.

It was 4 in the afternoon. He was in a jail cell after taking on a group of people in a fight, and when they breathalysed him so they could release him, he was still over the legal limit.

“This just can’t go on.”

He went to rehab. Once he was clean, he took off, and 6 years later he had a PhD.

Being treated like an authority doesn’t mean you feel like one.

When Pat Davidson started as a professor, people looked at him like he was in charge. After his first class, a student asked him to sign court papers to prove to a judge they’d attended.

He’d spent years as the person in trouble, not the person signing off on someone else. “I’m not someone that should be in charge of other people at all.”

Pat Davidson’s blueprint for learning a topic, step by step.

Find the critical books. Highlight the important parts on the first read. Type the highlights out word for word. Read that back and rewrite it in your own words.

Read your version out loud and record it. Listen to the recording a few times. Write out everything you know from memory, record that, and listen on commutes and while doing other things.

He calls it vicious, and it’s meant to be. Like squatting, you get good through reps, so the system is built to give you as many reps on the topic as possible.

A good book can hold ten years of someone else’s life. Pat Davidson’s system lets him take in those ten years in about two weeks.

On the first read he highlights everything important. Then he types the highlights out word for word, reads them back and rewrites them in his own words. He reads that out loud, records it and listens to it several times. Then he writes the whole topic out from memory, records that, and plays it on commutes and while doing other things.

It’s training applied to knowledge. Getting good at squats takes a million reps, so he puts as many reps into the topic as he possibly can.

The test of Pat Davidson’s learning system is presenting. When he gave a talk on a topic, it felt like listening to his own recordings coming out of his mouth.

That recall comes from repetition. He takes the critical books on a subject, highlights the important parts, types the highlights out word for word, then rewrites them in his own words. He reads that out loud and records it, listens back several times, then writes everything out from memory and records that version for his commutes.

He calls it vicious. It’s the same logic as squatting. You get good with a huge number of reps, and he gets as many reps on the topic as he can.

Pat Davidson treats learning like training. To get good at squatting you do a million reps of squats, so to learn a topic he does as many reps on it as he can.

His system starts with the critical books on a subject. Highlight the important parts on the first read, then type the highlights out word for word. Read that back, rewrite it in your own words, then read it out loud and record it on your phone.

Listen to the recording, write out from memory everything you think you know, record that too, and play it on the commute.

Every step is another rep on the same material, which is why it sticks.

Pat Davidson needed an investor and realised he already had one. It was the one inside his own head.

He and a business partner were trying to open a group fitness gym and came up a couple of hundred thousand dollars short. Out of rich people to ask, he put his own knowledge to work instead and wrote Mass 2 in a few weeks.

He’d done it before. The first Mass, still a cult classic for how brutal the workouts are, was written in a weekend when he was about to miss rent.

What you know can bring money to the table, if you sit down and put it to work.
