MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S GOLF REPORT

Stableford, Thursday September 3

The largest Thursday field in some time turned up last week for the Stableford competition, with four grades being decided. The player numbers were bolstered by a contingent of South Australian golfers in town.

Shaun Lawry (23) was the leader at the end of the day as the sole player in the field on 39 Stableford points with his 92 off the stick. Coming from golfing heritage, his forebears would be proud of Shaun’s efforts to lead C Grade and the field overall.

Lyonel O’Shannassay (10) did just enough in A Grade to hold off Harper Wilson (2) after they both finished on 38 points, first and second. Lyonel’s strong back nine securing the first spot in A Grade with three over off the stick. Paul Bethune (10) was not far behind in third place on 37 points.

B Grade battled in the conditions with the trio of winners all below 36 points with Rod Prockter (16) on 33 points, just in front of David Manns (17) – also on 33, and Bob Burns (14) third on 32. Darryl Domaille (25) and Chris Grant (20) tied on 36 points, finishing behind the overall winner in C Grade in that order.

Neil Chisolm (37) was the leader in D Grade with 38 points with Chance Gadsden (43) second on 37 with Adrian Walker (30) rounding out the places on 35 points.

Monthly Medal Stroke, Saturday September 5

When handicaps come into play and players count every shot in the Monthly Medal, it is the truest test of golf for the average punter. Outside of playing with no handicaps like the pros – and the annual club championships – this is certainly the competition of greatest interest month to month.

Jordan King (28) was the winner on the day with his 96 off the stick meant his nett score was 68, -4. Holding the ship level on the front nine, Jordan came home with momentum on the back nine with three pars the highlight. Laurie Shipsides (16) also showed us all that he has still got it, shooting a nett -2 of his handicap of 16 for second place. Zachary Haywood (18) was the last player who bettered the course with his Nett 71 securing him third overall.

Sam Davis (9) and Charles Talboys (26) finished nett even with the card in fourth and fifth with Luke Doolan (7), Ash Free (8), Craig Fletcher (11), Stuart Holt (16) and Lance Stobaus (15) all rounding out the top ten on +1. Christopher Knee won the prize in the putting competition with the least number of putts on the day.

Stableford, Sunday September 6

The best of the men in the reduced Sunday field were Anthony Fleming (18) on 40 points, Gary Blencowe on 38 and Tynan Perry (6) on 37. Jason Perry collected a bonus for hitting it close on the eleventh hole, hitting it to 94 centimetres.

🌿 Many hands make light work!

Join us for a working bee this Friday at 9am. We’ll be spreading mulch at the front of the Club where the trees have been removed, plus tackling a general tidy-up in other areas.

If you can spare a little time, we’d love a hand. All help is greatly appreciated! 🙌

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S GOLF REPORT

Stableford, Thursday August 27

The score to beat last Thursday was 43 points, with John Pertzel (18) shooting this fine score to claim first prize overall in the competition and take out the B Grade honours. John birdied the seventh hole and took a commanding lead with 23 points on the front nine, sailing home with 20 points on the back, four points clear of the next competitor.

In A Grade, Mark Warren (11) finished first on a countback on 36 points, with his 21 points on the back nine only just beating Dale Smith (13) who had 20 points himself on the homeward stretch. Christy Merritt (13) had another fine round placing third in the top grade on 35 points.

The B Grade prize winners behind John Pertzel were Chris Fordham (19) on 39 points and Bryan Bautista (18) on 35. C Grade saw a close contest between Tony Wilson (34) and Mick Closehy (25) who both completed their round on 39 points, with Tony’s 21 point effort on the back nine securing him first place. Gregory Daniels (26) was third in C Grade on 35 points.

Murray Downs 36 Hole 2 Person Ambrose Tournament, Saturday/Sunday August 29-30

One hundred and sixty two competitors entered the annual 2 Person Ambrose Tournament with the early touches of Spring creating the perfect conditions for golfing at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club. The team of Casey (0) and Jeremy Schmidt (1) from Horsham Golf club dominated the course and were the Tournament’s scratch winners with 19 birdies across the two days, finishing with 126 off the stick.

Luke and Harper Wilson were crowned the Nett champions with the lowest Nett scores on each day of competition, ending with Nett 124.5 off their combined handicap of 2.25. With 61.75 on the Saturday including eight birdies and 62.75 on the Sunday with one eagle and six birdies, the rest of the field had a tough time keeping pace with the leading pair.

Young guns Tynan Perry and Lucas Free secured second place on the final day with 33 shots on the back nine to finish on Nett 129 off their handicap of 2.5 and beat their nearest rivals on a countback. Andrew Gilchrist and Paul Bethune were dignified in their acceptance of third place overall, also having Nett 129 off their combined handicap of 5.5.

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S GOLF REPORT

Stableford, Thursday August 20

Three grades were decided in the competition last Thursday with Mick Clohesy the best of the rest with 38 points off his handicap of 27. Mick also took out C Grade honours with a birdie on the 7th hole and a 20-point front nine.

Matthew Loats (8) did enough to beat the 35-brigade in A Grade with his 18 points on the back nine enough to beat the other two players who also finished on 35 points. Behind Matt on countback was Bob Burns (14) and Lyonel O’Shannassy (10).

Roger Walker (21) was first in B Grade with 37 points after a hot start. Steven Kerr (19) had 35 for second place and Mick Kiley (20) was third on 34 points.

All three winners in C Grade ended up on 38 points. It was only the countback that decided things and Tom Wilkins (33) was just behind and Aron Hutchinson was third.

Par, Saturday August 22

Hats off to Rick Harding (11) who had a wonderful round on Saturday to finish on top of the leaderboard with +5 in the Par competition. Consistent golf was the tale of the tape for Rick with only two lost holes in his round. Shane Ingram was not too shabby either with his +3 effort to finish second behind Rick in A Grade and Andrew Gilchrist – who we have been watching closely over the past few weeks – had another good round with +2 in third.

Stuart Holt (15) was out for what seems like his first round in a while, and he played well for +1 and first place in B Grade. Justin Toomey (16) also had +1 but had to play second fiddle with Ross Hendy (14) was finishing third, square with Par.

Paul Raudino (19) is warming up for the club championships later this year with his +2 and a win in C Grade. Kayne Walker (19) was on a tear after the first nine and finished in the silver medal position on +1 and we see Mick Kiley’s name again on 0 as he was third again after his fine effort on Thursday.

4BBB Stableford, Sunday August 23

The Teams competition on Sunday gave players a chance to pair-up and Matthew Battenally (23) had 22 points on the back nine to ensure his partnership with Brenton Halligan (12) was the winning team on 70 aggregated points. Richard (33) and Mary (36) Johnson were second on 66 points and Harper Wilson (2) and Tynan Perry (6) were third on 65 points.
