Grappling for Footy

For Juniors and Seniors of all Footy codes, the hardest element to deal with is the physicality of tackling and being tackled.

Grappling prepares the mind with techniques and the body with toughness.

Awesome training sesh this morning with this crew from Helensvale Hornets! We worked on tackling, falling safely, breaking down the stiff arm, flexibility, dexterity, neck and core strength. Great group of lads and a very talented female junior too!

Well Footy season is coming round again, had the pleasure of hosting the AFL champs Richmond FC on the mats today, and saturday mornings I have a junior Rugby League team coming in for pre season grappling work outs.

As with last year, I'm ready to get full teams in or have individuals in our classes.

Success story #5
Isiah is already a talented League and Union player. He was recently selected for the Broadwater Union rep team, tried out for South Coast and made that team too. His father has noticed a considerable improvement in his Tackling and Body contact since he started in our program a couple months ago.

Isiah is still in Primary school and was up against some High School kids at the trials, well done mate!

Success story #4
Riley has been attending our Grappling for Footy classes consistently, and last week we introduced some drills to develop fending off tacklers. In wrestling, fending is called 'stiff arm' and is a very common tactic. Here's Riley using his enhanced fending skills to break the line and score a try from the kick off!

Great work mate!

Success Story #3
Jayce came in last week and trained twice in our program. He then went and played 4 games at a carnival on Sunday, scoring 2 tries, got the most improved award in his team and was named the best tackler at the whole under 7's Carnival!!

Well done Jayce!!

Success story #2- Well done to Malakai for getting Man of the Match!

He's done 2 sessions with us so far and has learnt how to safely perform front and side tackles with his head in safe positions, and how to get up for a quick play the ball Melbourne Storm style!

Success Story #1
Olly (second from left) is 5 years old and plays for the Mudgeereba Redbacks. When told that the U/6's weren't allowed to tackle this year he insisted on playing up in the U/7's.

He prepared for his first year of Footy by training in our Grappling classes in the pre-season. Grappling/Wrestling gave him a higher level of physical toughness and a greater understanding on how to bring people to the ground.

Even though he's small, he won MAN OF THE MATCH for his defence and tackling.

Congratulations Olly, he's proving that being small is not a problem when you know what you're doing! with - Leoni Muoio
