Growing up, I was an active kid, always playing, socialising, and participating in sports. But at 16, I was diagnosed with an anxiety and panic disorder. My teenage brain thought the only way to feel better was to stop doing anything that made me anxious. It got so bad that I left school just before my HSC exams in year 12.
Feeling stuck at home with my parents and pressured to get a job made me panic about my future. I tried many different jobsโcleaning, hospitality, administrationโbut none made me want to get out of bed. Often, I would wake up and cry or sit outside work trying to calm myself before walking in.

I ended up in the exact position I feared most: injured, living with my parents, jobless, and not seeing the sun for weeks. I ruptured two ligaments in my ankle by stepping off a curb wrong, a surprisingly common injury.
As I regained my ability to walk, I felt angry about where I was in life. I did a lot of research on different jobs outside my comfort zone, like being an electricianโฆ or a writer... you know what i hadnโt actually narrowed it down, i just daydreamed about all these different, exciting jobs that I could possibly start.
In physio, I realised my ankle was still weak, so I started going to the gym. I wore a baggy t-shirt and big headphones, paranoid about being judged. A friend joined me, and I naturally started instructing her on simple movements. She suggested I become a personal trainer.
I figured I had nothing to lose, so I didn't tell anyone at first. But of course when living with parents, they always catch on to what you are doing. During my PT training, I realised how much I enjoyed helping others start exercising. The feelings that had held me back for so long, didnโt bother me like they did before.
Now, I have my own small business. It's definitely hard to jump into full-time with no real plan or backup, but I've never woken up crying or wished to be anywhere else. I still feel anxiety and self-doubt, but doing something that makes others smile takes the edge off.
