LIFT before DEPTH
Ustrasana (Camel Pose) ๐Ÿช

In last weekโ€™s experienced classes, students explored Ustrasana (Camel Pose), practicing lifting the chest, creating length, stability, and space. Through strong legs, an uplifted sternum, and focus on the correct alignment, the pose becomes both energising and expansive.

In Ustrasana (Camel Pose) or other backbend preparations, there is the temptation to instinctively focus on bending backwards as deeply as possible. This can compress the lower back and collapse the chest. Instead, in Iyengar yoga, we explicitly teach:

๐Ÿ’™ Lifting the sternum (breastbone) upwards,
๐Ÿ’™ Lengthening the front of the torso,
๐Ÿ’™ Drawing the shoulder blades into the back to broaden and open the chest,
๐Ÿ’™ Grounding firmly through the shins and thighs,
๐Ÿ’™ Creating space between the vertebrae.
๐Ÿ’™ Extending the head and neck horizontally.

Only after establishing this upward lift and spaciousness do you move further into the backbend. With the awareness of length and lift, the pose feels supported, spacious, and alive.

SELF PRACTICE
This week, students were given a written sequence to experience a self-practice within the studio environment - without prompts, timings or adjustments.
Of course, I still answered questions and ensured students were not compromising the integrity of the poses and practising safely.

As a teacher, this is an opportunity to get useful insights to assess where further explicit teaching may be required. It may also reveal where the foundations lack attention to detail.

If you have done yoga before but are new to Iyengar yoga, that's why we always start to teach Iyengar yoga foundations in our specifically designed beginners' course. Enquire about our next beginners course. Links in BIO.

What did you learn in your self-practice session this week? Please leave a comment.
