Yesterday’s narrow loss to Newtown in the semi-final hurts. Of course it does. We’re competitive, we care, and we wanted to keep going.
But sometimes football and netball can be cruel. There are hundreds of moments throughout a game that contribute to the final result, and we shouldn’t allow one moment — or the final 30 seconds — to define an entire season.
It’s hard not to replay those final moments in our heads. It’s natural to feel disappointed and emotional. But the result is the result, and nothing we say or do now will change it. What we can control is how we respond.
We show respect to the umpires, the league and our opponent yesterday (Newtown). We accept the result and we hold our heads high.
Because what this group has achieved is something we should be incredibly proud of.
Our 12pm Development team has had a fantastic season. The boys, coaches, training staff, parents, volunteers and everyone who stood on “the Hill” and supported them during the finals, have all played a part.
This isn’t the end of something.
This is the start of something.
Use yesterday. Use the disappointment. Use the feeling of being so close. Let it drive you. Let it make you train harder, prepare better and believe even more next season.
But don’t use it to blame.
Blame isn’t us. That’s not the St Albans way.
Our brand is getting stronger. We’re earning respect. We’re building something together — a club that is competitive, proud, respectful and united.
So let’s celebrate this season. Let’s celebrate the growth, the friendships, the commitment and the journey these young men have been on.
Then let’s get hungry.
Let’s go deeper into the finals next year. And deeper again the year after that.
Yesterday was a chapter, not the story.
To every player, coach, trainer, parent, volunteer and supporter — thank you. You should all be incredibly proud of what you’ve helped create.
