It saddens us to announce the passing of Jim Smith, one of the great servants of the Newport Breakers Rugby Club. Jim was a Life Member, Club President and a very successful coach of the Breakers.
Jim’s coaching career at Newport started with a bang, leading the Club to the Reliance Shield 2nd Division Club Championship in 1997 and promotion to 1st Division in 1998.
In only our second year in the Premier competition, Jim led Newport to the 1999 Kentwell Cup premiership.
Jim continued coaching 1st Grade and added another premiership in 2003, this time with our Barraclough Cup team.
After hanging up the clipboard, Jim took on the role of Club President from 2006 to 2008, continuing to give back to the Club he had already done so much for.
Jim had a massive influence at the Breakers, both on and off the field, and his contribution to the Club will always be remembered.
Although we haven’t seen as much of Jim in recent years since he moved to the Central Coast, he will always be part of the Breakers family.
Our thoughts are with Jim’s family and friends at this sad time.
Once a Breaker, always a Breaker.
