National Surfing Reserves are 'iconic' places of intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value to a nation.

World Surfing Reserves, a program of Save The Waves, proactively identifies, designates and preserves outstanding waves, surf zones and surrounding environments around the world. NSR embrace all peoples to enjoy, understand and protect special coastal environments of universal value to the surfing world. A Surfing Reserve does not attempt to exclude any user group. NSR is a voluntary covenant with no legal status such as the Noosa Biosphere Reserve.

What is a surf ecosystem?

A surf ecosystem is the land-to-sea interface that creates the conditions for breaking, rideable waves, and the flora and fauna and human communities that are dependent upon it.

Save The Waves’ World Surfing Reserve (WSR) program proactively identifies, designates, and preserves outstanding surf ecosystems around the world. WSRs represent a global network of designated surfing reserves that are managed, implemented, and protected by local communities.

For more information about the World Surfing Reserve program, head over to and check out the links in their bio.
Or jump onto the Noosa World Surfing Reserve website for more information about your local WSR.

If you want to learn more about all the components of a surf ecosystem and how they interact with each other, check out the new paper “The Surf Ecosystem as an Emerging Framework for Managing Coastal and Marine Resources,” which was published in .portfolio.

Recently SLSQ and QPWS installed a remote rescue tube at Alexandria Bay and another at Noosa North Shore. Five rescue tubes now across the Noosa area, with more hopefully on the way.

📍 Tea Tree Bay
📍 Granite Bay
📍 Alexandria Bay — with a second one coming
📍 Outside the Noosa Heads SLSC
📍 Noosa North Shore
📍 North Sunshine (Doggy) Beach — fingers crossed

The system was tested—press the button and SurfCom responds instantly. Within a minute, activation is underway.

Big thank you to all those involved at pushing this through and making our beaches even safer for water users alike!

Reposted from Councillor Amelia Lorentson’s post, thank you for the support!

August is getting close, and NISFF 2026 is starting to feel very real.

Four days of Surf Films, ocean stories, big-screen energy, filmmaker voices and the kind of festival atmosphere that makes Noosa feel alive in a completely different way.

The screenings fill up. The room starts buzzing before the lights go down. People spill out afterwards still talking about the film, the wave, the story, the line that landed, the moment that caught them off guard. Familiar faces keep turning up, new favourites hit the screen, and before long, the whole festival starts moving with its own pulse.

This is what NISFF does best. It brings surf culture, cinema, community and ocean storytelling into the same room, then lets the energy build from there.

Our wonderful committee member Danielle Tomlinson is down competing in the Noosa World Surfing Reserve Para Team!
With a stall set up, come and see Dan to learn more about what we do and inclusive surfing for those with hidden disabilities.

Remote rescue tubes have now received the green light to be rolled out through the Noosa National Park — including Alexandria Bay — thanks to strong advocacy from Noosa World Surfing Reserve and our surfing community. One has already been installed at Access 25B near the eastern end of Tea Tree Bay, and I’ll continue working with NWSR to progress the broader rollout. We can’t wait, and last week showed us why.

There was another close call at A‑Bay last week, where three rescuers — including Graham Sanders, father of Noosa lifeguard Rory, and Justin, a part‑time soldier and Troy, a former lifeguard — saved a Queensland family from drowning after they were caught in a powerful rip and dragged towards dangerous rocks.

In a remote, unpatrolled location like A‑Bay, their quick actions prevented what could have been a devastating outcome. These incidents highlight exactly why remote rescue tubes matter. They don’t stop drownings, but they give people a better chance while help is on the way.

We were lucky again — but we cannot keep relying on luck.

I’ll be pushing hard to accelerate this rollout, because remote rescue tubes need to be in place before the next incident, not after it.
