Nitschke & Tourneur take on Stromlo
This Friday evening, AMC athletes ( ) and Hannah Tourneur ( ) head to Canberra for the world cross country trials that take place on the purpose built Stromlo course.
This will be Arronās first trials, but after a fantastic winter that has seen medals in the road state 10k, track 5,000m and being 10th Aussie across the line at National XC earlier in the winter, heās only getting better! An ever consistent training block, that involves a lot of cycling to accommodate his world class Duathlon ambitions, he has been a picture of consistency and never backs down at a chance to race the best in the nation! This will be a good experience, as will the following weekend as he takes on the tour of bright on his road bike šŖ.
Hannah will race the very deep looking U20 womenās field in her longest race distance to date! However, a national champion (u18) in both the 1500 and 3000m, she more than deserves respect at the start line of any distance she steps on! This winter has been very consistent working with the and week in week out. These trials will kick off a busy fortnight for Hannah, as she heads off to all schools to defend her 1500 and 3000m titles as well āļø
Good luck to our superstars, along with the other amazing / athletes taking on the world cross trials this Friday night!

The inaugural Rotary Mt Barker Gift Carnival at the idyllic Cornerstone College Athletics Oval, in the beautiful Adelaide Hills is host to the next stop of the SA Athletic League 2025-26 roadshow.
With race distances mirroring those on offer at the Bay Sheffield, the racing promises to be red hot. In the 1st of our 2025-26 race previews we are going to have a look at the feature race of the day the Mt Barker District Athletics Club Mt Barker Mile. With a prize pool of $800 for the race, some of the big names of South Australian distance running will be heading up the hill aiming to be the 1st athlete to put their name on what Iām sure will become a feature mile on the race calendar in years to come.
The field is headlined by a number of the states top 1500m/5km runners, with the Michael Nitschke trained Adelaide Milers Crew, based out of Adelaide University, bringing a bus full of the state's top runners up.
Headlining the field is one of South Australiaās top distance runners in Cooper Giles (75m). Fresh off the best season of his career in 2024/25 running PBs across all distances from 800-5km, Cooper will be one of the best athletes youāll see compete across the season with the league. The Michael Nitschke trained athlete with PBs of 1:56 (800m), 3:49 (1500), 8.16 (3k) and 14.37 (5k) is the class of the field and will do the honour of running in red justice. Broke the clock when winning at Kensington over the mile in 2023 and is never far away from the money in the select mile down the Bay. Can run.
2023 Bay Sheffield Select Mile winner Zac Connell (85m) is back having a run with the league for the first time since that successful day. Another one of Michael Nitschkeās stable of star middle distance athletes, the 4th year physiotherapy student comes into the race fit and is primed to be right amongst it when the whips are cracking. With PBs of 1:54 (800m), 3:54 (1500) and a 8:28 (3k), Zac has wheels and knows how to use them. Will be in it for a long time.
One of the most exciting juniors to come out of the state in recent years 19-year old Alex Rawley (90m) will be having his 1st start with the league. The Adelaide Milers Crew athlete who had a successful European summer season will be hoping continue the impressive trajectory his career is already on. At his best a 3:54 (1500m), 8:36 (3k) and 14:47 (5k) guy and if he is anywhere near top form just wins. A kid with exceptional talent will be one to watch over the coming years.
Brother of the previously mentioned Cooper Giles, Bailey Giles (95m) will have a big say in how this race pans out. Has finished on the podium in the biggest mile on the SAAL calendar the select Bay mile back in 2023. He is better know though for his results on the blue track. With PBs of 1:56 (800m), 3:57 (1500m), 8:37 (3km) and 14:53 (5km), if the pack doesnāt tack on early will do some damage.
Another one of Michael Nitschkeās elite charges is 19-year old Harry McGregor (145m). Fresh off a sparkling 9:01 (3km) season opener at Box Hill a fortnight ago and with more upside than most, Harry will be looking to hold off the Milers Crew train thatāll be sure to be chugging late. A big watch.
Grange Track Squad Athlete and Terry McAuliffe favourite Juvenal Doko Tchatoka (150m) will have his first run with the league this season in Mt Barker. Broke the clock when he ran a 1.57 800m to win the State All Schools Championships over the weekend just gone to show the massive amounts of work he has done through winter. A former Bay Sheffield Junior 800m winner, Juvenal can run and comes into this event in sparkling form.
Another athlete to keep an eye on is exciting junior Ivy Strawhorn (240m). One of the smoothest movers youāll see all day and fresh off winning a super fast 800m at the State All-Schools Championships last weekend comes into this meet fit. May find competing in open class for the first time a challenge, but will be great to see her stride around her local track. A 60 second 400m, 2.14 800m and 4.42 1500m athlete at her best, if she can be close at the bell will storm home.
Other athletes to keep an eye on include; winner of the 800m/1600m double at the recent Crystal Brook meeting Gianny Scoleri (295m), Marion 1600m winner this season Zade Kretschmer (300m), 3-time winner on the circuit last season and already a winner this season at Marion over 300m Mercedes Tierney (380m) and the evergreen Gaetano Aiello (480m), who just keeps getting better.
At 4.20pm on Sunday ensure you have the paella in hand, donut and coffee or drink of choice full and sit back and watch the best 4 minutes of running youāll see all weekend. These athletes and primed and ready to go and desperate to take home the inaugural Mile sash from Mt Barker.

After a busy year 12 exam period, followed it up with an equally busy Finale to her all schools campaign in Brisbane! An exhaustive program that most would not attempt, was handled so well by the athlete who spends a high percentage of her training time solo after school or at home in the Adelaide hills!
Em would walk away with 2 national medals, 2 PBs, 1 SB and plenty of good memories running for her School!
