World Homeless Day: Where Belonging Begins
World Homeless Day, observed on 10 October, reminds us that homelessness is about far more than the absence of a roof. Itโs about access to safety, dignity, connection, health and a sense of belonging.
Across South Australia, YMCA Aquatic is committed to ensuring the SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre and Adelaide Aquatic Centre are more than places to swim, exercise or learn new skills. They are community hubs where people can feel welcome, build confidence, make meaningful connections and support their wellbeing.
This vision aligns with the principles of Doughnut Economics, which focus on meeting peopleโs essential needs while respecting the environmental limits of our planet. In practice, this means creating opportunities for connection, health, employment and participation, while also embracing sustainability through responsible use of resources and waste reduction.
Since 2023, this commitment has extended beyond our walls through the provision of free showers, hygiene and sanitary products, clothes washing facilities, and a warm cup of tea or coffee for those doing it tough. Inspired by a Year 12 SACE Research Project and the story of Ray, pictured here, the initiative has been made possible through the generosity of volunteers, dedicated teams and a community that believes everyone deserves care, respect and support.
Aquatic and leisure centres cannot solve homelessness alone, but they can play a meaningful role by creating safe, welcoming and affordable spaces where people feel seen, valued and connected. Sometimes, a simple act of kindness, a warm conversation or an open door can make all the difference.
This journey continues in November, where we will launch a special initiative dedicated to supporting Veterans. Stay tuned, because our facilities are more than buildings and pools. They are places of connection, inclusion and community, and together we can continue creating spaces where everyone belongs.
