๐Ÿ† Petrie Shield ๐Ÿ†

The Petrie Shield is awarded each year at the Leopardโ€™s to a junior and a senior for excellence in community service.

The President each year asks for nominations from coaches. Usually there are several member to chose from but this year there was one guy who was such a clear front runner that once this nomination was received, there really was no need for our President to consider anyone else.

What a honour it is to announce Adrian Spry as the 2026 Petrie Shield winner.

Rugby clubs are often judged on what happens between the white lines on a Saturday afternoon โ€” the tackles, the tries, and the moments that decide a game. But anyone who has spent time around this club knows the real heartbeat of it exists long after full time.

Adrian is absolutely one of those players on the field โ€” a bloody pest to play against, relentless in everything he does, and someone who never gives an inch.

But what makes Adrian truly special is everything he does away from the game.

Week in, week out, Adrian and his beautiful family are there long after the final whistle, helping clean up after game day. Packing away gear, tidying the sheds, picking up the small things that most people donโ€™t even notice โ€” they are always there, never needing to be asked. And thatโ€™s the key thing about Adrian โ€” he never asks what needs to be done, he just rolls up his sleeves and gets it done. Itโ€™s not a once-off effort or something done for recognition; itโ€™s just who they are. And it is a perfect reflection of the culture this club is so proud of.

Off the field, Adrian is one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet.

He is the definition of community spirit. Year after year, he steps up without being asked. He takes ownership of social events, helps organise meat tray raffles, and is always looking for ways to bring people together around the club.

He doesnโ€™t just support the club โ€” he builds it.

When junior teams need help, and coaches are unavailable or stretched, Adrian is there. He steps in without hesitation, giving his time and energy to make sure the next generation of players are supported, included and looked after.

He is also the driving force behind many of the clubโ€™s cultural and social initiatives. Whether itโ€™s a craft-a-noon, a themed event, or a new way to celebrate culture and heritage, Adrian is always the one bringing ideas forward. And more importantly, he doesnโ€™t just suggest them โ€” he comes with a clear plan. A four-point plan, at that, on how it will actually get done.

Thatโ€™s who Adrian is. Not just an ideas man, but someone who delivers.

He is incredibly giving to our community in every sense of the word. His contribution is constant, thoughtful and selfless. And while he will absolutely hate this public recognition โ€” and will no doubt cringe at every compliment โ€” it is important that it is said.

Adrian, alongside his family, represents everything that makes this club special. The willingness to stay back, to help out, to do the unseen work, and to make sure the club is left better than they found it is exactly what we are about.

The Petrie Shield is about service, spirit and contribution to the wider club community.

Adrian embodies all of it!

๐Ÿ† letโ€™s celebrate Adrian and his amazing contribution to the Leopardโ€™s community ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ†Leopardโ€™s Senior Presidents Cup๐Ÿ†

Each year every coach is asked to nominate players to receive the coveted Presidentโ€™s Cup Award.

The criteria given to coaches is to nominate the player who best embodies the Leopards spirit. Whether this is their skill on the field, their team first attitude or their commitment to playing the game in the spirit of rugby.

Coach Jake gave our President a tough line up this year to chose from this year.

Ultimately our President could not look past one nomination, the contribution Joshua Mathers has made to not just the seniors, but to the juniors and the club as a whole. He wholeheartedly and selflessly embodies what is means to be a Leopard.

Hereโ€™s what Jake had to say about Josh in his nomination:

In rugby, itโ€™s easy to recognise the players who make the tackles, score the tries and put their bodies on the line each weekend.

But sometimes, the greatest measure of a player is who they are when they canโ€™t take the field.

Josh has had a long and difficult journey back to playing following a season-ending injury nearly three years ago. It would have been easy to drift away from the game during that time, to step back and wait for the moment he could return as a player.

But Josh never stepped away from his club.

Instead, he stepped up.

When he wasnโ€™t able to play, Josh took on the role of team medic. And he didnโ€™t just fill a role โ€” he committed to it fully. This year, he has grown into it, actively seeking out knowledge, asking questions from experienced medics, and constantly looking for ways to better support the team.

He showed a genuine desire to learn, improve, and be useful wherever he could.

Josh became a steady presence around the club. On Friday nights when there were no games, he would still be down at the club โ€” not because he had to be, but because he wanted to be there. Putting in. Being present. Supporting the environment that supports him.

On Friday nights and Saturday medics duty, Josh has been a constant. And one thing has become clear across the club: when there is a medical issue, itโ€™s always โ€œget Joshโ€ โ€” regardless of whether he is officially on medic duty or not. Players, coaches and officials alike know that if something happens, Josh is already on his way.

He is trusted, relied upon, and always willing to step in without hesitation.

No matter the situation, Josh never backed down from being involved. Whether it was senior rugby, training nights or game days, he found ways to contribute and make a difference.

There is something incredibly special about a player who continues to give to their club even when they are not the one taking the field.

Josh has shown that being part of a team is about far more than just playing.

Commitment is showing up when it would be easier not to.
Character is stepping into a role that helps others succeed.
Club spirit is being there whenever you are needed, in whatever capacity that may be.

Josh has embodied all of those things throughout this season and beyond.

His injury may have taken him off the field, but it never took him away from his club.

And that is exactly the kind of person, teammate and clubman that a Presidentโ€™s Award should recognise.

๐Ÿ† letโ€™s all congratulate and celebrate Josh and his contribution to the Leopardโ€™s ๐Ÿ†
